Engleski romanopisac Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (1899. – 1966.), poznatiji pod pseudonimom C. S. Forester je autor dvanaest knjiga o britanskom pomorskom oficiru u doba Napoleonskih ratova koji su se početkom 19. stoljeća dvanaest godina, praktično, vodili na svim morima svijeta. Romani opisuju životni i profesionalni put Horatia Hornblowera koji je unatoč tome što potječe iz siromašne obitelji i nema utjecajnih prijatelja uspio dogurati do čina admirala.

Osim u Foresterovim romanima, hrabri i sposobni Horatio se pojavljuje i kao glavni junak raznih radio i TV emisija, a o njegovim podvizima je snimljeno i nekoliko filmova. Forester je inspiraciju za svoja djela pronalazio u Arhivu Kraljevske mornarice gdje je našao toliko uzbudljivih i nevjerojatnih podataka da mu, kako je sam rekao, nije trebala nikakva mašta za smišljanje događaja.

Zbog velike doze realizma i povijesne utemeljenosti fabule, mnogi su bili skloni povjerovati da Horatio Hornblower nije fiktivni nego stvarni lik iz britanske mornaričke povijesti. Tome je pridonijelo ime glavnog lika koji se zove isto kao i njegov imenjak, stvarni admiral, Nelson, a još više i knjiga Cyrila Northcote Parkinsona, tj. biografija objavljena 1970. pod imenom The Life and Times of Horatio Hornblower. Navodno se u Londonu jednom pojavio i povjesničar koji je, zainteresiran za Hornblower Papers potegao čak iz Kanade u londonski National Maritime Museum.

Engleski romanopisac Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (1899. – 1966.), poznatiji pod pseudonimom C. S. Forester je autor dvanaest knjiga o britanskom pomorskom oficiru u doba Napoleonskih ratova koji su se početkom 19. stoljeća dvanaest godina, praktično, vodili na svim morima svijeta. Romani opisuju životni i profesionalni put Horatia Hornblowera koji je unatoč tome što potječe iz siromašne obitelji i nema utjecajnih prijatelja uspio dogurati do čina admirala.

Osim u Foresterovim romanima, hrabri i sposobni Horatio se pojavljuje i kao glavni junak raznih radio i TV emisija, a o njegovim podvizima je snimljeno i nekoliko filmova. Forester je inspiraciju za svoja djela pronalazio u Arhivu Kraljevske mornarice gdje je našao toliko uzbudljivih i nevjerojatnih podataka da mu, kako je sam rekao, nije trebala nikakva mašta za smišljanje događaja.

Zbog velike doze realizma i povijesne utemeljenosti fabule, mnogi su bili skloni povjerovati da Horatio Hornblower nije fiktivni nego stvarni lik iz britanske mornaričke povijesti. Tome je pridonijelo ime glavnog lika koji se zove isto kao i njegov imenjak, stvarni admiral, Nelson, a još više i knjiga Cyrila Northcote Parkinsona, tj. biografija objavljena 1970. pod imenom The Life and Times of Horatio Hornblower. Navodno se u Londonu jednom pojavio i povjesničar koji je, zainteresiran za Hornblower Papers potegao čak iz Kanade u londonski National Maritime Museum.
