Lucas je imao samo šest godina kad je dobio strašnu dijagnozu - obolio je od glioma moždanog debla, jednog od najbrže rastućih tumora mozga. Liječnici su njegovim očajnim roditeljima morali reći da Lucas vjerojatno neće preživjeti niti godinu dana.

No, od tog je strašnog dana prošlo već sedam godina, dječak je proslavio 13. rođendan, a tumoru više nema ni traga, piše Science Alert.

Ovaj dječak iz Belgije je prvo dijete na svijetu koje je izliječeno od glioma moždanog debla, kažu njegovi liječnici.

‘Lucas je pobijedio sve izglede preživljavanja‘, rekao je francuski liječnik Jacques Grill, voditelj programa za tumore na mozgu u Centru za rak Gustave Roussy u Parizu.

Tumor, punog naziva difuzni intrinzični pontinski gliom (DIPG), agresivni je oblik tumora uslijed kojeg smrt najčešće nastupa nakon devet mjeseci od postavljanja dijagnoze, a otkrije se svake godine kod oko 300 djece u SAD-u i oko stotinjak u Francuskoj. Nedavna studija pokazala je da samo 10 posto djece s tim tumorom preživi dvije godine.

Radioterapija ponekad može usporiti širenje agresivnog tumora, ali dosad ga nijedan lijek nije uspio izliječiti.

Lucas i njegovi roditelji doputovali su u Francusku kako bi sudjelovali u eksperimentalnom liječenju koje ispituje potencijalne nove lijekove za DIPG. Lucas je od samog početka imao snažne reakcije na lijek protiv raka everolimus (Afinitor), koji mu je nasumično dodijeljen.

Liječnik se nije usudio prekinuti režim liječenja, no prije godinu i pol dana otkrio je da Lucas ionako više ne uzima lijekove.

‘Koliko ja znam, ovo je jedini ovakav slučaj u svijetu‘, rekao je doktor Grill.

Zašto se točno Lucas potpuno oporavio i kako bi njegov slučaj mogao pomoći drugoj djeci poput njega, tek će se vidjeti. U ispitivanju je sudjelovalo još sedmero djece koja su preživjela još godinama nakon dijagnoze, ali samo je Lucasov tumor potpuno nestao.

Razlog zbog kojeg su ova djeca reagirala na lijekove dok druga nisu, vjerojatno je povezano s biološkim posebnostima njihovih pojedinačnih tumora, rekao je Grill. ‘Lucasov tumor je imao izuzetno rijetku mutaciju, pa vjerujemo da su zbog toga njegove stanice bile osjetljivije na lijek.‘

Znanstvenici će sad pokušati in vitro reproducirati razlike identificirane u njegovim stanicama kako bi otkrili točnu metodu kojom su stanice raka ubijene. Upozorili su da je bilo kakvo moguće liječenje većeg broja djece još uvijek daleko.

‘U prosjeku je potrebno 10 do 15 godina od prvog eksperimenta da nešto postane lijek, to je dugotrajan proces‘, rekao je doktor Grill.

‘Iz jedne magnetske rezonance u drugu gledao sam kako tumor potpuno nestaje‘, rekao je doktor koji je liječio dječaka

Lucas je imao samo šest godina kad je dobio strašnu dijagnozu - obolio je od glioma moždanog debla, jednog od najbrže rastućih tumora mozga. Liječnici su njegovim očajnim roditeljima morali reći da Lucas vjerojatno neće preživjeti niti godinu dana.

No, od tog je strašnog dana prošlo već sedam godina, dječak je proslavio 13. rođendan, a tumoru više nema ni traga, piše Science Alert.

Ovaj dječak iz Belgije je prvo dijete na svijetu koje je izliječeno od glioma moždanog debla, kažu njegovi liječnici.

‘Lucas je pobijedio sve izglede preživljavanja‘, rekao je francuski liječnik Jacques Grill, voditelj programa za tumore na mozgu u Centru za rak Gustave Roussy u Parizu.

Tumor, punog naziva difuzni intrinzični pontinski gliom (DIPG), agresivni je oblik tumora uslijed kojeg smrt najčešće nastupa nakon devet mjeseci od postavljanja dijagnoze, a otkrije se svake godine kod oko 300 djece u SAD-u i oko stotinjak u Francuskoj. Nedavna studija pokazala je da samo 10 posto djece s tim tumorom preživi dvije godine.

Radioterapija ponekad može usporiti širenje agresivnog tumora, ali dosad ga nijedan lijek nije uspio izliječiti.

Lucas i njegovi roditelji doputovali su u Francusku kako bi sudjelovali u eksperimentalnom liječenju koje ispituje potencijalne nove lijekove za DIPG. Lucas je od samog početka imao snažne reakcije na lijek protiv raka everolimus (Afinitor), koji mu je nasumično dodijeljen.

Liječnik se nije usudio prekinuti režim liječenja, no prije godinu i pol dana otkrio je da Lucas ionako više ne uzima lijekove.

‘Koliko ja znam, ovo je jedini ovakav slučaj u svijetu‘, rekao je doktor Grill.

Zašto se točno Lucas potpuno oporavio i kako bi njegov slučaj mogao pomoći drugoj djeci poput njega, tek će se vidjeti. U ispitivanju je sudjelovalo još sedmero djece koja su preživjela još godinama nakon dijagnoze, ali samo je Lucasov tumor potpuno nestao.

Znanstvenici će sad pokušati in vitro reproducirati razlike identificirane u njegovim stanicama kako bi otkrili točnu metodu kojom su stanice raka ubijene. Upozorili su da je bilo kakvo moguće liječenje većeg broja djece još uvijek daleko.

‘Iz jedne magnetske rezonance u drugu gledao sam kako tumor potpuno nestaje‘, rekao je doktor koji je liječio dječaka

Lucas je imao samo šest godina kad je dobio strašnu dijagnozu - obolio je od glioma moždanog debla, jednog od najbrže rastućih tumora mozga. Liječnici su njegovim očajnim roditeljima morali reći da Lucas vjerojatno neće preživjeti niti godinu dana.

No, od tog je strašnog dana prošlo već sedam godina, dječak je proslavio 13. rođendan, a tumoru više nema ni traga, piše Science Alert.

Ovaj dječak iz Belgije je prvo dijete na svijetu koje je izliječeno od glioma moždanog debla, kažu njegovi liječnici.

‘Lucas je pobijedio sve izglede preživljavanja‘, rekao je francuski liječnik Jacques Grill, voditelj programa za tumore na mozgu u Centru za rak Gustave Roussy u Parizu.

Tumor, punog naziva difuzni intrinzični pontinski gliom (DIPG), agresivni je oblik tumora uslijed kojeg smrt najčešće nastupa nakon devet mjeseci od postavljanja dijagnoze, a otkrije se svake godine kod oko 300 djece u SAD-u i oko stotinjak u Francuskoj. Nedavna studija pokazala je da samo 10 posto djece s tim tumorom preživi dvije godine.

Radioterapija ponekad može usporiti širenje agresivnog tumora, ali dosad ga nijedan lijek nije uspio izliječiti.

Lucas i njegovi roditelji doputovali su u Francusku kako bi sudjelovali u eksperimentalnom liječenju koje ispituje potencijalne nove lijekove za DIPG. Lucas je od samog početka imao snažne reakcije na lijek protiv raka everolimus (Afinitor), koji mu je nasumično dodijeljen.

Liječnik se nije usudio prekinuti režim liječenja, no prije godinu i pol dana otkrio je da Lucas ionako više ne uzima lijekove.

‘Koliko ja znam, ovo je jedini ovakav slučaj u svijetu‘, rekao je doktor Grill.

Zašto se točno Lucas potpuno oporavio i kako bi njegov slučaj mogao pomoći drugoj djeci poput njega, tek će se vidjeti. U ispitivanju je sudjelovalo još sedmero djece koja su preživjela još godinama nakon dijagnoze, ali samo je Lucasov tumor potpuno nestao.
