Skijaške akrobacije Jamesa Bonda u “Pogledu na ubojstvo” spomenute su u “Ekstremnom usponu” (“Summit Fever”). “Skijao je kao da je Roger Moore ili neko takvo sranje”, kaže Leo u izvedbi Ryana Philippea. Likovi filma skijaju niz snježne padine gotovo kao Bond, ali “Ekstremni uspon” nije uvodna scena “Pogleda na ubojstvo” rastegnuta na cjelovečernjak. Posrijedi je planin(ar)ska drama s elementima trilera i filma katastrofe, a ne akcija.

To što se likovi penju i na poznati vrh iz akcijskog filma Clinta Eastwooda “Kazna na planini Eiger” ne znači da će “Summit Fever” biti takav. Neće biti ni “Vertikalna granica” niti “Cliffhanger”, premda prelijepa francuska glumica Mathilde Warnier u ulozi Isabelle podsjeća na Janine Turner.

Više je ovo tip filma kao “K2”, “Dodirnuti vrh”, “Everest” i “Himalaja”, inferioran, ali korektan do umjereno solidan i penjačko-planinarski dostatno autentičan. Omjer praktičnih i digitalnih efekata ne ide u korist potonjih, vjerojatno zato što je režiser i scenarist Julian Guilbey zapravo planinar, stoga je preferirao, kako Leo kaže, “staro dobro planinarenje”, tj. lokacijsko snimanje na pravim planinama, s tek povremenim studijskim setovima (od) umjetnih stijena.

Guilbeyjev pristup čini jedan prilično formulaičan film interesantnijim i uzbudljivijim nego što jest s ekspedicijom koja polazi po zlu i generičkim romantičnim podzapletom. “Ekstremni uspon” je najbolji kad se likovi nalaze na planini i gledatelj tu i tamo ima osjećaj kao da je s njima gore, zahvaljujući režiji.

Glavni likovi su prijatelji i penjački partneri Michael i JP (Freddie Thorp, Michel Biel) koji se bacaju na penjanje i osvajanje izazovnih vrhova, počevši od 4013 metara visokog Dent du Géant na Mont Blancu, a zatim i ostatak svetog alpskog trojstva, opasni Eiger (3970 m) i Matterhorn (4478). Njihova karakterna dinamika, prijateljstvo i penjačko partnerstvo fino su skicirani, kao i sve veća ovisnost o adrenalinu smrtonosnog visinskog planinarenja koja graniči s opsesijom.

Za njih je planinarenje kao surfanje u “Paklenom valu”. Međutim, Thorp i Biel nisu toliko dobri i karizmatični glumci, što se osjeti u neplaninarskim scenama, pa gledatelj žali što barem nekoć popularni Philippe (“Studio 54”, “Znam što si radila prošlog ljeta”, “Okrutne namjere”) nema veću ulogu budući da s njima u kadru djeluje kao oskarovac.

S druge strane, angažman manje poznatih faca potencira nepredvidljivost filma jer je pitanje tko bi od njih mogao stradati, a tko ostati živ kad zbog oluje koja se samo pogoršava zapnu blizu vrha i vjetar postane prejak za spuštanje ili slanje spasilačkog helikoptera te krene borba za preživljavanje.

Sredina filma, nakon jednog pogibeljnog pokušaja postavljanja novog rekorda u brzini penjanja, pati od razvučenosti i nedogađajnosti ako se izuzme romansa Thorpa i Isabelle koja, usput, voli snimati planinarenje kamerom iz sedamdesetih, što omogućava redatelju šačicu umjetničkih “Super 8” kadrova.

Ipak, završna etapa je (prije nego što nastupi noć i smanji vidljivost) visinski uzbudljiva, napeta i vrtoglava, možda ne onako kao u “Padu”, ali sasvim dovoljno, s kadrovima podjednako predivne i strašne planine, odnosno borbe čovjeka i majke prirode na život i smrt. Strah od visina je tu opipljiv.

Skijaške akrobacije Jamesa Bonda u “Pogledu na ubojstvo” spomenute su u “Ekstremnom usponu” (“Summit Fever”). “Skijao je kao da je Roger Moore ili neko takvo sranje”, kaže Leo u izvedbi Ryana Philippea. Likovi filma skijaju niz snježne padine gotovo kao Bond, ali “Ekstremni uspon” nije uvodna scena “Pogleda na ubojstvo” rastegnuta na cjelovečernjak. Posrijedi je planin(ar)ska drama s elementima trilera i filma katastrofe, a ne akcija.

To što se likovi penju i na poznati vrh iz akcijskog filma Clinta Eastwooda “Kazna na planini Eiger” ne znači da će “Summit Fever” biti takav. Neće biti ni “Vertikalna granica” niti “Cliffhanger”, premda prelijepa francuska glumica Mathilde Warnier u ulozi Isabelle podsjeća na Janine Turner.

Više je ovo tip filma kao “K2”, “Dodirnuti vrh”, “Everest” i “Himalaja”, inferioran, ali korektan do umjereno solidan i penjačko-planinarski dostatno autentičan. Omjer praktičnih i digitalnih efekata ne ide u korist potonjih, vjerojatno zato što je režiser i scenarist Julian Guilbey zapravo planinar, stoga je preferirao, kako Leo kaže, “staro dobro planinarenje”, tj. lokacijsko snimanje na pravim planinama, s tek povremenim studijskim setovima (od) umjetnih stijena.

Guilbeyjev pristup čini jedan prilično formulaičan film interesantnijim i uzbudljivijim nego što jest s ekspedicijom koja polazi po zlu i generičkim romantičnim podzapletom. “Ekstremni uspon” je najbolji kad se likovi nalaze na planini i gledatelj tu i tamo ima osjećaj kao da je s njima gore, zahvaljujući režiji.

Glavni likovi su prijatelji i penjački partneri Michael i JP (Freddie Thorp, Michel Biel) koji se bacaju na penjanje i osvajanje izazovnih vrhova, počevši od 4013 metara visokog Dent du Géant na Mont Blancu, a zatim i ostatak svetog alpskog trojstva, opasni Eiger (3970 m) i Matterhorn (4478). Njihova karakterna dinamika, prijateljstvo i penjačko partnerstvo fino su skicirani, kao i sve veća ovisnost o adrenalinu smrtonosnog visinskog planinarenja koja graniči s opsesijom.

Za njih je planinarenje kao surfanje u “Paklenom valu”. Međutim, Thorp i Biel nisu toliko dobri i karizmatični glumci, što se osjeti u neplaninarskim scenama, pa gledatelj žali što barem nekoć popularni Philippe (“Studio 54”, “Znam što si radila prošlog ljeta”, “Okrutne namjere”) nema veću ulogu budući da s njima u kadru djeluje kao oskarovac.

S druge strane, angažman manje poznatih faca potencira nepredvidljivost filma jer je pitanje tko bi od njih mogao stradati, a tko ostati živ kad zbog oluje koja se samo pogoršava zapnu blizu vrha i vjetar postane prejak za spuštanje ili slanje spasilačkog helikoptera te krene borba za preživljavanje.

Sredina filma, nakon jednog pogibeljnog pokušaja postavljanja novog rekorda u brzini penjanja, pati od razvučenosti i nedogađajnosti ako se izuzme romansa Thorpa i Isabelle koja, usput, voli snimati planinarenje kamerom iz sedamdesetih, što omogućava redatelju šačicu umjetničkih “Super 8” kadrova.

Ipak, završna etapa je (prije nego što nastupi noć i smanji vidljivost) visinski uzbudljiva, napeta i vrtoglava, možda ne onako kao u “Padu”, ali sasvim dovoljno, s kadrovima podjednako predivne i strašne planine, odnosno borbe čovjeka i majke prirode na život i smrt. Strah od visina je tu opipljiv.
