Dobitnu oskarovsku formulu matematičkom je preciznošću riješio "Genijalni um" (2001.), film o legendarnom, shizofrenijom načetom matematičaru i nobelovcu Johnu Nashu. Matematika + duševni ili tjelesni hendikep = Oscar. "A Beautiful Mind" djeluje kao da je dobiven jednadžbom iz oskarovskog sustava kvalitetnih hollywoodskih "crowd pleaser" drama osamdesetih i devedesetih.

Konkretno, "Kišnog čovjeka" i "Dobrog Willa Huntinga" (briljantni autist, genijalni matematičar), s daškom "Društva mrtvih pjesnika" i "Mirisa žene" (studentski život na elitnom kampusu među profesorima-akademicima). Ništa nije prepušteno slučaju u kontekstu prestižnog "Genijalnog uma" da pridobije struku i publiku.

Iza kamere je stao čovjek po ukusu Akademijinih glasača, režiser-hitmejker Ron Howard ("Willow", "Vatrene kacige", "Ucjena"), koji je pet godina ranije došao nadomak Oscaru s "Apollom 13", a glavna uloga je povjerena zvjezdanom Russellu Croweu, onomad friškom dobitniku zlatnog kipića (karakterno dijametralno suprotni "Gladijator") i oskarovskom nominentu ("Probuđena savjest", njegova ponajbolja uloga).

Kalkulacija se isplatila i "A Beautiful Mind" je postao veliki kinohit sa zaradom od 170 milijuna dolara samo u američkim kinima, plus još 140 u ostatku svijeta, a pozlatio se i s četiri važna Oscara, za najbolji film, Howardovu režiju, adaptirani scenarij Akive Goldsmana i predivnu Jennifer Connelly u sporednoj ženskoj ulozi Nashove brižne supruge Alicije.

Pitanje i dan-danas stoji je li "Genijalni um" trebao slaviti pored npr. prvog i najboljeg "Gospodara prstenova", napose Howard u snažnoj konkurenciji s Davidom Lynchom ("Mulholland Drive"), Robertom Altmanom ("Gosford Park"), Peterom Jacksonom ("LOTR") ili Ridleyjem Scottom ("Pad crnog jastreba").

No, ukoliko je u pobjedi i presudila matematička "Oscar bait" formula filma, to ne umanjuje njegovu kvalitetu i umjetničku vrijednost unutar moderne visokoprofilne hollywoodske kinematografije. "Matematika je umjetnička forma, štogod vam rekli", kazuje Nash u jednoj sceni, kao da se između redaka obraća "art-house" snobovima koji poslovično kolutaju očima na "matematičarske" oskarovske drame.

Kao što je Nash stvorio umjetnost na staklu, riješavajući zadatke na prozoru sobe, tako i Howard u nadahnutijim scenama filma stvara umjetnost s prizorima brojki koje se izdvajaju i svijetle na ekranu, oslikavajući rad protagonistovih klikera dok on stoji pred ekranom u krupnjaku, ispred vrhuške Pentagona, kao da se nalazi u psihološkom trileru Briana De Palme ("Odjevena da ubije", "Pucanj nije brisan"), snimljenom diopter lećama koje izjednačuju oštrinu prednjeg i stražnjeg plana, odnosno pozadine kadra.

Ako je "A Beautiful Mind" čisti "fabricirani" Hollywood, to je još uvijek Hollywood koji podrazumijeva vrhunsku produkciju, ispoliranu režiju, ispeglani scenarij i izvrsnu glumu u ozbiljnom filmu na ozbiljnu temu mentalne bolesti koji u konačnici uspijeva biti i dirljivi "feel good movie", a ako nije "genijalan", ne odvija se ni onako konvencionalno kako je mogao u okvirima klasične biografske drame, uzimajući određene žanrovske i ine slobode.

Prva trećina filma naizgled kao da će postati novi "Dead Poet's Society", prateći Nasha i družinu matematičare (Josh Lucas, Adam Goldberg, Anthony Rapp...), uključujući njegovog "razmetnog cimera" Charlesa (Paul Bettany), sredinom četrdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća na Princetonu.

Matematičari traže matematičko objašnjenje za uletavanje ženskama radeći prave i krive procjene, u pauzi od učenja pod paskom profesora (Judd Hirsch) koji ih podučava vrednotama visoke škole, tipa da se naliv pera daruju kolegama u formi poštovanja kad dobiju nagradu životno djelo, ako ne i samome životu poput nezaboravnog profe Johna Keatinga u tumačenju Robina Williamsa u "Društvu mrtvih pjesnika".

Ipak, Nash kao lik prolazi prilično dug put prije nego na njegov stol počnu pristizati naliv pera, kad Howard inscenira vlastitu katarzičnu "Oh, captain, my captain" scenu (penjanje učenika na stolove da pozdrave profesora Keatinga). Nash nam se predstavlja kao povučeni, društveno neprilagođeni "tajnoviti genij" s "dvije porcije mozga i jednom srca" kojemu su draži brojevi od ljudi. Omjere porcija Nashova mozga i srca, ali i filma izjednačit će studentica matematike Alicia.

Connelly je srce "Genijalnog uma" kojoj bi čovjek skinuo sve matematičke zvijezde s neba i od njih "nacrtao" sve "šerburške kišobrane" ovog svijeta, što će Nash na svoj način i napraviti stvarajući matematičke obrasce koji ne postoje. U krasnoj romantičnoj sceni on će na nebeskom svodu pronaći "obrazac" i "nacrtati" štogod ona poželi od zvijezda koje će "povezati" u oblik kišobrana itd. kao da je sazviježde Oriona ili Velikog medvjeda.

Ova scena prelama film budući da su tu posijani prvi tragovi njegova preokreta. Polovicom pedesetih, u vrijeme Hladnog rata između Amerike i Rusije, Nash počinje raditi za Ministarstvo obrane kao dešifrant ("codebreaker"), razbijajući šifre u novinama i časopisima koje ubacuju ruski špijuni, kako tvrdi vladin agent William Parcher (Ed Harris) prije nego što će vrbovati matematičara.

Kad Nash razbije šifre, ubacuje ih u "top secret" paketima u tajni pretinac na tajnoj lokaciji gdje će ih vlada pokupiti, izbjegavajući usput ruske špijune koji ga prate i hvataju dok se on brine za vlastiti život i boji se da bi mogao pasti kao žrtva urote. "A Beautiful Mind" tu u potpunosti razbija dramsku strukturu, mijenja žanrovski registar i postaje hladnoratovski paranoidni špijunski triler da bi uslijedio "twist" – Nash je shizofreničar, Parcher ne postoji (kao ni njegov cimer Charles), nitko ga ne slijedi i nema urote.

Ništa od toga nije stvarno. Sve to, samim time i cijeli podžanr unutar filma, opstoji u Nashovoj glavi i vizualizacija je njegovih zastrašujućih paranoidnih iluzija, "shizofreni odmak od stvarnosti". Možda se ovaj preokret, podjednak za lika i publiku koja je vjerovala u sve što i on, ne bi dogodio da dvije godine ranije nije snimljeno "Šesto čulo".

Međutim, ovako je "Genijalni um" ispao manje dramski manipulativan (realno i više filmičan) nego da je Nash veći dio filma pričao "u prazno" s nekim publici nevidljivim koga samo on vidi te provodio vrijeme u mentalnoj ustanovi i bio podvrgnut šok-terapijama pod nadgledanjem dobronamjerna psihijatra (Christopher Plummer) da ga gledatelj sažaljeva.

U protivnom, tko zna bismo li bez ovog i ovakvog "A Beautiful Mind" danas dobili još bolju oskarovsku dramu "The Father" s vizualizacijom uma nagrižena demencijom i aktivnom participacijom gledatelja u protagonistovu doživljaju bolesti. "Otac" to može zahvaliti "Genijalnom umu" koji u osnovi priča univerzalnu, životno afirmirajuću priču o nadvladavanju hendikepa i trijumfu ljudskog duha pomoću nečega što pokreće pojedinog čovjeka. Za Nasha u filmu to je bila matematika. Matematika ljubavi.

Izostavljene biografske crtice

"Genijalni um" je jedan od rijetkih filmova najvećim dijelom snimljen kronološki, a neki detalji iz Nashova života nisu uvršteni u priču, primjerice njegove afere s muškarcima, teorije da ga kontaktiraju izvanzemaljci, kao i to da se Alicia razvela od njega da bi mu se opet vratila i ponovno su se oženili. P.S. "A Beautiful Mind" se prikazuje 29. travnja u jutarnjim satima na Cinemaxu, a repriza je 6. svibnja ranije popodne.

Dobitnu oskarovsku formulu matematičkom je preciznošću riješio "Genijalni um" (2001.), film o legendarnom, shizofrenijom načetom matematičaru i nobelovcu Johnu Nashu. Matematika + duševni ili tjelesni hendikep = Oscar. "A Beautiful Mind" djeluje kao da je dobiven jednadžbom iz oskarovskog sustava kvalitetnih hollywoodskih "crowd pleaser" drama osamdesetih i devedesetih.

Konkretno, "Kišnog čovjeka" i "Dobrog Willa Huntinga" (briljantni autist, genijalni matematičar), s daškom "Društva mrtvih pjesnika" i "Mirisa žene" (studentski život na elitnom kampusu među profesorima-akademicima). Ništa nije prepušteno slučaju u kontekstu prestižnog "Genijalnog uma" da pridobije struku i publiku.

Iza kamere je stao čovjek po ukusu Akademijinih glasača, režiser-hitmejker Ron Howard ("Willow", "Vatrene kacige", "Ucjena"), koji je pet godina ranije došao nadomak Oscaru s "Apollom 13", a glavna uloga je povjerena zvjezdanom Russellu Croweu, onomad friškom dobitniku zlatnog kipića (karakterno dijametralno suprotni "Gladijator") i oskarovskom nominentu ("Probuđena savjest", njegova ponajbolja uloga).

Kalkulacija se isplatila i "A Beautiful Mind" je postao veliki kinohit sa zaradom od 170 milijuna dolara samo u američkim kinima, plus još 140 u ostatku svijeta, a pozlatio se i s četiri važna Oscara, za najbolji film, Howardovu režiju, adaptirani scenarij Akive Goldsmana i predivnu Jennifer Connelly u sporednoj ženskoj ulozi Nashove brižne supruge Alicije.

Pitanje i dan-danas stoji je li "Genijalni um" trebao slaviti pored npr. prvog i najboljeg "Gospodara prstenova", napose Howard u snažnoj konkurenciji s Davidom Lynchom ("Mulholland Drive"), Robertom Altmanom ("Gosford Park"), Peterom Jacksonom ("LOTR") ili Ridleyjem Scottom ("Pad crnog jastreba").

No, ukoliko je u pobjedi i presudila matematička "Oscar bait" formula filma, to ne umanjuje njegovu kvalitetu i umjetničku vrijednost unutar moderne visokoprofilne hollywoodske kinematografije. "Matematika je umjetnička forma, štogod vam rekli", kazuje Nash u jednoj sceni, kao da se između redaka obraća "art-house" snobovima koji poslovično kolutaju očima na "matematičarske" oskarovske drame.

Kao što je Nash stvorio umjetnost na staklu, riješavajući zadatke na prozoru sobe, tako i Howard u nadahnutijim scenama filma stvara umjetnost s prizorima brojki koje se izdvajaju i svijetle na ekranu, oslikavajući rad protagonistovih klikera dok on stoji pred ekranom u krupnjaku, ispred vrhuške Pentagona, kao da se nalazi u psihološkom trileru Briana De Palme ("Odjevena da ubije", "Pucanj nije brisan"), snimljenom diopter lećama koje izjednačuju oštrinu prednjeg i stražnjeg plana, odnosno pozadine kadra.

Ako je "A Beautiful Mind" čisti "fabricirani" Hollywood, to je još uvijek Hollywood koji podrazumijeva vrhunsku produkciju, ispoliranu režiju, ispeglani scenarij i izvrsnu glumu u ozbiljnom filmu na ozbiljnu temu mentalne bolesti koji u konačnici uspijeva biti i dirljivi "feel good movie", a ako nije "genijalan", ne odvija se ni onako konvencionalno kako je mogao u okvirima klasične biografske drame, uzimajući određene žanrovske i ine slobode.

Prva trećina filma naizgled kao da će postati novi "Dead Poet's Society", prateći Nasha i družinu matematičare (Josh Lucas, Adam Goldberg, Anthony Rapp...), uključujući njegovog "razmetnog cimera" Charlesa (Paul Bettany), sredinom četrdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća na Princetonu.

Matematičari traže matematičko objašnjenje za uletavanje ženskama radeći prave i krive procjene, u pauzi od učenja pod paskom profesora (Judd Hirsch) koji ih podučava vrednotama visoke škole, tipa da se naliv pera daruju kolegama u formi poštovanja kad dobiju nagradu životno djelo, ako ne i samome životu poput nezaboravnog profe Johna Keatinga u tumačenju Robina Williamsa u "Društvu mrtvih pjesnika".

Ipak, Nash kao lik prolazi prilično dug put prije nego na njegov stol počnu pristizati naliv pera, kad Howard inscenira vlastitu katarzičnu "Oh, captain, my captain" scenu (penjanje učenika na stolove da pozdrave profesora Keatinga). Nash nam se predstavlja kao povučeni, društveno neprilagođeni "tajnoviti genij" s "dvije porcije mozga i jednom srca" kojemu su draži brojevi od ljudi. Omjere porcija Nashova mozga i srca, ali i filma izjednačit će studentica matematike Alicia.

Connelly je srce "Genijalnog uma" kojoj bi čovjek skinuo sve matematičke zvijezde s neba i od njih "nacrtao" sve "šerburške kišobrane" ovog svijeta, što će Nash na svoj način i napraviti stvarajući matematičke obrasce koji ne postoje. U krasnoj romantičnoj sceni on će na nebeskom svodu pronaći "obrazac" i "nacrtati" štogod ona poželi od zvijezda koje će "povezati" u oblik kišobrana itd. kao da je sazviježde Oriona ili Velikog medvjeda.

Ova scena prelama film budući da su tu posijani prvi tragovi njegova preokreta. Polovicom pedesetih, u vrijeme Hladnog rata između Amerike i Rusije, Nash počinje raditi za Ministarstvo obrane kao dešifrant ("codebreaker"), razbijajući šifre u novinama i časopisima koje ubacuju ruski špijuni, kako tvrdi vladin agent William Parcher (Ed Harris) prije nego što će vrbovati matematičara.

Kad Nash razbije šifre, ubacuje ih u "top secret" paketima u tajni pretinac na tajnoj lokaciji gdje će ih vlada pokupiti, izbjegavajući usput ruske špijune koji ga prate i hvataju dok se on brine za vlastiti život i boji se da bi mogao pasti kao žrtva urote. "A Beautiful Mind" tu u potpunosti razbija dramsku strukturu, mijenja žanrovski registar i postaje hladnoratovski paranoidni špijunski triler da bi uslijedio "twist" – Nash je shizofreničar, Parcher ne postoji (kao ni njegov cimer Charles), nitko ga ne slijedi i nema urote.

Ništa od toga nije stvarno. Sve to, samim time i cijeli podžanr unutar filma, opstoji u Nashovoj glavi i vizualizacija je njegovih zastrašujućih paranoidnih iluzija, "shizofreni odmak od stvarnosti". Možda se ovaj preokret, podjednak za lika i publiku koja je vjerovala u sve što i on, ne bi dogodio da dvije godine ranije nije snimljeno "Šesto čulo".

Međutim, ovako je "Genijalni um" ispao manje dramski manipulativan (realno i više filmičan) nego da je Nash veći dio filma pričao "u prazno" s nekim publici nevidljivim koga samo on vidi te provodio vrijeme u mentalnoj ustanovi i bio podvrgnut šok-terapijama pod nadgledanjem dobronamjerna psihijatra (Christopher Plummer) da ga gledatelj sažaljeva.

U protivnom, tko zna bismo li bez ovog i ovakvog "A Beautiful Mind" danas dobili još bolju oskarovsku dramu "The Father" s vizualizacijom uma nagrižena demencijom i aktivnom participacijom gledatelja u protagonistovu doživljaju bolesti. "Otac" to može zahvaliti "Genijalnom umu" koji u osnovi priča univerzalnu, životno afirmirajuću priču o nadvladavanju hendikepa i trijumfu ljudskog duha pomoću nečega što pokreće pojedinog čovjeka. Za Nasha u filmu to je bila matematika. Matematika ljubavi.

Izostavljene biografske crtice

"Genijalni um" je jedan od rijetkih filmova najvećim dijelom snimljen kronološki, a neki detalji iz Nashova života nisu uvršteni u priču, primjerice njegove afere s muškarcima, teorije da ga kontaktiraju izvanzemaljci, kao i to da se Alicia razvela od njega da bi mu se opet vratila i ponovno su se oženili. P.S. "A Beautiful Mind" se prikazuje 29. travnja u jutarnjim satima na Cinemaxu, a repriza je 6. svibnja ranije popodne.

‘Genijalni um‘: Matematičar za Oscara

Dobitnu oskarovsku formulu matematičkom je preciznošću riješio "Genijalni um" (2001.), film o legendarnom, shizofrenijom načetom matematičaru i nobelovcu Johnu Nashu. Matematika + duševni ili tjelesni hendikep = Oscar. "A Beautiful Mind" djeluje kao da je dobiven jednadžbom iz oskarovskog sustava kvalitetnih hollywoodskih "crowd pleaser" drama osamdesetih i devedesetih.

Konkretno, "Kišnog čovjeka" i "Dobrog Willa Huntinga" (briljantni autist, genijalni matematičar), s daškom "Društva mrtvih pjesnika" i "Mirisa žene" (studentski život na elitnom kampusu među profesorima-akademicima). Ništa nije prepušteno slučaju u kontekstu prestižnog "Genijalnog uma" da pridobije struku i publiku.

Iza kamere je stao čovjek po ukusu Akademijinih glasača, režiser-hitmejker Ron Howard...
