AGFA videokaseta od 240 minuta sadrži jednu od najpogođenijih filmskih kombinacija iz osobne VHS kolekcije: "Oficir i džentlmen" ("An Officer and a Gentleman", 1982.) i "Top Gun". Megahit "Oficir i džentlmen" svojevrsni je prednastavak "Top Guna", njegova preteča.

Zack Mayo (Richard Gere), glavni lik filma u režiji Taylora Hackforda, želi letjeti mlažnjacima i prijavljuje se u školu američkog mornaričkog zrakoplovstva. Ako prođe strogi vojni "drill", nagrada je "letačka obuka vrijedna milijun dolara" i, ultimativno, upravljanje bojnim avionima.

Dakle, "Top Gun" prije "Top Guna". Povrh toga, na krilima oba filma glavni glumci su poletjeli do zvijezda (Gere, Tom Cruise), a pokreće ih i ljubavna priča koja "An Officer and a Gentleman" karakterizira kao romansu, premda je u osnovi dramski, ne akcijski blockbuster kao "Top Gun". Upravo zato "Oficir i džentlmen" je naraštaju osamdesetih bio manje zanimljiv od "Top Guna" u realnom vremenu, dok je njihovim roditeljima bio najdraža nova romantična drama.

Mlađi gledatelji iz tog doba najviše pamte Gereovu solidnu demonstraciju karatea u dva navrata, protiv provokatora ispred bara i u duelu s narednikom Foleyjem (izvrsni Louis Gossett Jr., zasluženo nagrađen Oscarom), ali u sjećanju su ostale i još neke dramske scene koje retrospektivno gledano čine "An Officer and a Gentleman" jednom od formativnijih drama generacije osamdesetih.

Recimo, scena kad ogorčeni Mayov prijatelj Sid (David Keith) popije zaručnički prstena poput tablete. Naravno, pamti se i upečatljiva završnica kad Mayo dođe po Paulu (Debra Winger), uzme je u naručje na taktove oskarovske pjesme "Up Where We Belong" Joea Cockera i Jennifer Warnes te takvi ostanu zamrznuti u kadru za vječnost.

Po tome, ultimativnoj romantičnoj sceni za osamdesete i šire, nakon koje je svaka žena htjela biti Winger, a svaki muškarac maštao da je Gere i da nosi nju ili neku svoju Debru u naručju, "Oficir i džentlmen" je najviše ostao zapamćen u kolektivnoj podsvijesti jednako kako se pamti "Groznica subotnje večeri" po diskoidnoj glazbi i plesu Johna Travolte.

Međutim, ni ovaj film nije samo ta scena, kao što ni "Saturday Night Fever" nije samo ples, odnosno tko ga se sjeća isključivo po njoj trebao bi osvježiti sjećanje i mogao bi se iznenaditi koliko karakterne i socijalne drame prethodi romantičnoj završnici.

"An Officer and a Gentleman" nema atraktivnu zračnu akciju "Top Guna", ali ima prizemljenu dramu, emociju i karakterizaciju. Prije 40 godina "Oficir i džentlmen" je bio hollywoodski "major" film (Paramount Pictures), a danas bi mogao proći kao američki nezavisnjak, barem do sentimentalne završne scene.

Uvodna scena kao da pristiže iz autorskog filma sedamdesetih, vremena kad je Gere snimao s Terrenceom Malickom ("Božanstveni dani"), prije probojnog nastupa u "Američkom žigolu" koji ga je doveo do ove uloge. Majo promatra oca pijanca (Robert Loggia) kako leži u krevetu s prostitutkama, nakon čega se njegovo sjećanje vraća u djetinjstvo, kad je njegova majka počinila samoubojstvo, a otac, bivši vojnik, nije imao vremena "izigravati tatu" i sina smatra gubitnikom.

Gere pokazuje mišiće u uvodnoj sceni, odjeven u donju majicu, ali Majo neće igrati odbojku u "slow motionu" kao Cruiseov Maverick s kojim ga povezuju nagla narav i "daddy issues". Njegova prijava u školu za obuku budućih oficira je bijeg od prošlosti i pokušaj da dokaže nešto sebi, ocu i svijetu, suoči se sa strahom od neuspjeha.

Isprve Foley ispada negativac, prethodnik "drill" instruktora iz "Full Metal Jacketa" na kojeg podsjeća bujnim vokabularom i zlostavljačkim gardom. "Gdje ste bili? Orgijali? Slušali Micka Jaggera kako pljuje svoju zemlju?", dere se Foley na vojne regrute koji moraju njega proći da postanu oficiri. "U Oklahomi uzgajaju dvije vrste, bikove i gayeve, što si ti?", pita on Sida.

Foley je tu da napravi sve kako bi psihofizički spotaknuo kandidate poput Zacka, lomio ih i slomio, otkrio njihove slabosti "kao potencijalnog avijatičara i čovjeka". No, Foley ustvari metaforički utjelovljuje Zackov strah i kada se Majo psihofizički suočava s njim, istovremeno se suočava i sa samim sobom, tj. svojih demonima, zbog čega i odbija odustati od obuke čak i kad mu je najteže.

Prilikom njihovog najžešćeg duela Gere ostvaruje jednu od najboljih glumačkih scena karijere, kad Majo u suzama i mukama iskreno otkriva Foleyju "Nemam kuda da odem, ništa drugo nemam...". S vremenom je jasno da je Foley više njegov mentor, možda i zamjenski otac, netko koga će Majou u konačnici cijeniti jer bez njega ne bi prošao obuku. "Nikad vas neću zaboraviti, naredniče", kaže on.

Odnos između narednika i Zacka je kičma filma, a njegovo srce romansa s Paulom, lijepom pripadnicom radničke klase kakvu bi, da je "An Officer and a Gentleman" nastao u ex-YU kinematografiji, lako moguće igrala Mira Furlan. "Ne znam kako bi prošao kroz ovo da nisam imao nešto čemu sam se radovao", Majo će priznati Pauli koja radi u obližnjoj tvornici papira.

Kad Hackford prikaže eksterijere i interijere tvornice, jasno je da je Paula ženski lik s kojim su se mogle identificirati i mnoge žene u Jugoslaviji osamdesetih željne boljeg života. Opet, Paula nije tipična lokalka sa snovima da postane žena budućeg avijatičara, kamoli da tog avijatičara namami u zamku lažnom trudnoćom, kao njezina prijateljica i kolegica s posla Lynette (Lisa Blount) koja se viđa sa Sidom.

Na koncu, Paula je kćer oficira, no ovaj je odavno ostavio njezinu majku (Grace Zabriskie) koja još uvijek radi u istoj tvornici, a to je nešto što ona ne želi da joj se dogodi, već bi voljela uštedjeti i putovati svijetom, upoznati zanimljive ljude poput Zacka i obogatiti iskustvo. Oboje se boje ljubavi, posebice Majo koji nije nikad imao stalnu curu, zajedno će nadvladati strahove i shvatiti da odgovaraju jedno drugome.

Ljubavna priča se nenametljivo razvija, kao i njezini poistovjetljivi akteri opipljive kemije (sjajan par Gere-Winger), naročito Majo. Do kraja obuke Majo postaje ne samo oficir, nego i džentlmen, te zavrijeđuje krila mlažnjaka da s Paulom poleti gore u nebo. Up Where We Belong.

Gere i Winger u tunelu ljubavi

U sjeni "Up Where We Belong" ostala je "Tunnel Of Love" Dire Straitsa koja u jednoj sceni sa Zackom i Paulom nježno zasvira sa zvučnika u baru. Scenarist filma je Douglas Day Stewart ("Plava laguna"). Zvijezda je postala i Winger koja je godinu kasnije glumila u "Vremenu nježnosti".

AGFA videokaseta od 240 minuta sadrži jednu od najpogođenijih filmskih kombinacija iz osobne VHS kolekcije: "Oficir i džentlmen" ("An Officer and a Gentleman", 1982.) i "Top Gun". Megahit "Oficir i džentlmen" svojevrsni je prednastavak "Top Guna", njegova preteča.

Zack Mayo (Richard Gere), glavni lik filma u režiji Taylora Hackforda, želi letjeti mlažnjacima i prijavljuje se u školu američkog mornaričkog zrakoplovstva. Ako prođe strogi vojni "drill", nagrada je "letačka obuka vrijedna milijun dolara" i, ultimativno, upravljanje bojnim avionima.

Dakle, "Top Gun" prije "Top Guna". Povrh toga, na krilima oba filma glavni glumci su poletjeli do zvijezda (Gere, Tom Cruise), a pokreće ih i ljubavna priča koja "An Officer and a Gentleman" karakterizira kao romansu, premda je u osnovi dramski, ne akcijski blockbuster kao "Top Gun". Upravo zato "Oficir i džentlmen" je naraštaju osamdesetih bio manje zanimljiv od "Top Guna" u realnom vremenu, dok je njihovim roditeljima bio najdraža nova romantična drama.

Mlađi gledatelji iz tog doba najviše pamte Gereovu solidnu demonstraciju karatea u dva navrata, protiv provokatora ispred bara i u duelu s narednikom Foleyjem (izvrsni Louis Gossett Jr., zasluženo nagrađen Oscarom), ali u sjećanju su ostale i još neke dramske scene koje retrospektivno gledano čine "An Officer and a Gentleman" jednom od formativnijih drama generacije osamdesetih.

Recimo, scena kad ogorčeni Mayov prijatelj Sid (David Keith) popije zaručnički prstena poput tablete. Naravno, pamti se i upečatljiva završnica kad Mayo dođe po Paulu (Debra Winger), uzme je u naručje na taktove oskarovske pjesme "Up Where We Belong" Joea Cockera i Jennifer Warnes te takvi ostanu zamrznuti u kadru za vječnost.

Po tome, ultimativnoj romantičnoj sceni za osamdesete i šire, nakon koje je svaka žena htjela biti Winger, a svaki muškarac maštao da je Gere i da nosi nju ili neku svoju Debru u naručju, "Oficir i džentlmen" je najviše ostao zapamćen u kolektivnoj podsvijesti jednako kako se pamti "Groznica subotnje večeri" po diskoidnoj glazbi i plesu Johna Travolte.

Međutim, ni ovaj film nije samo ta scena, kao što ni "Saturday Night Fever" nije samo ples, odnosno tko ga se sjeća isključivo po njoj trebao bi osvježiti sjećanje i mogao bi se iznenaditi koliko karakterne i socijalne drame prethodi romantičnoj završnici.

"An Officer and a Gentleman" nema atraktivnu zračnu akciju "Top Guna", ali ima prizemljenu dramu, emociju i karakterizaciju. Prije 40 godina "Oficir i džentlmen" je bio hollywoodski "major" film (Paramount Pictures), a danas bi mogao proći kao američki nezavisnjak, barem do sentimentalne završne scene.

Uvodna scena kao da pristiže iz autorskog filma sedamdesetih, vremena kad je Gere snimao s Terrenceom Malickom ("Božanstveni dani"), prije probojnog nastupa u "Američkom žigolu" koji ga je doveo do ove uloge. Majo promatra oca pijanca (Robert Loggia) kako leži u krevetu s prostitutkama, nakon čega se njegovo sjećanje vraća u djetinjstvo, kad je njegova majka počinila samoubojstvo, a otac, bivši vojnik, nije imao vremena "izigravati tatu" i sina smatra gubitnikom.

Gere pokazuje mišiće u uvodnoj sceni, odjeven u donju majicu, ali Majo neće igrati odbojku u "slow motionu" kao Cruiseov Maverick s kojim ga povezuju nagla narav i "daddy issues". Njegova prijava u školu za obuku budućih oficira je bijeg od prošlosti i pokušaj da dokaže nešto sebi, ocu i svijetu, suoči se sa strahom od neuspjeha.

Isprve Foley ispada negativac, prethodnik "drill" instruktora iz "Full Metal Jacketa" na kojeg podsjeća bujnim vokabularom i zlostavljačkim gardom. "Gdje ste bili? Orgijali? Slušali Micka Jaggera kako pljuje svoju zemlju?", dere se Foley na vojne regrute koji moraju njega proći da postanu oficiri. "U Oklahomi uzgajaju dvije vrste, bikove i gayeve, što si ti?", pita on Sida.

Foley je tu da napravi sve kako bi psihofizički spotaknuo kandidate poput Zacka, lomio ih i slomio, otkrio njihove slabosti "kao potencijalnog avijatičara i čovjeka". No, Foley ustvari metaforički utjelovljuje Zackov strah i kada se Majo psihofizički suočava s njim, istovremeno se suočava i sa samim sobom, tj. svojih demonima, zbog čega i odbija odustati od obuke čak i kad mu je najteže.

Prilikom njihovog najžešćeg duela Gere ostvaruje jednu od najboljih glumačkih scena karijere, kad Majo u suzama i mukama iskreno otkriva Foleyju "Nemam kuda da odem, ništa drugo nemam...". S vremenom je jasno da je Foley više njegov mentor, možda i zamjenski otac, netko koga će Majou u konačnici cijeniti jer bez njega ne bi prošao obuku. "Nikad vas neću zaboraviti, naredniče", kaže on.

Odnos između narednika i Zacka je kičma filma, a njegovo srce romansa s Paulom, lijepom pripadnicom radničke klase kakvu bi, da je "An Officer and a Gentleman" nastao u ex-YU kinematografiji, lako moguće igrala Mira Furlan. "Ne znam kako bi prošao kroz ovo da nisam imao nešto čemu sam se radovao", Majo će priznati Pauli koja radi u obližnjoj tvornici papira.

Kad Hackford prikaže eksterijere i interijere tvornice, jasno je da je Paula ženski lik s kojim su se mogle identificirati i mnoge žene u Jugoslaviji osamdesetih željne boljeg života. Opet, Paula nije tipična lokalka sa snovima da postane žena budućeg avijatičara, kamoli da tog avijatičara namami u zamku lažnom trudnoćom, kao njezina prijateljica i kolegica s posla Lynette (Lisa Blount) koja se viđa sa Sidom.

Na koncu, Paula je kćer oficira, no ovaj je odavno ostavio njezinu majku (Grace Zabriskie) koja još uvijek radi u istoj tvornici, a to je nešto što ona ne želi da joj se dogodi, već bi voljela uštedjeti i putovati svijetom, upoznati zanimljive ljude poput Zacka i obogatiti iskustvo. Oboje se boje ljubavi, posebice Majo koji nije nikad imao stalnu curu, zajedno će nadvladati strahove i shvatiti da odgovaraju jedno drugome.

Ljubavna priča se nenametljivo razvija, kao i njezini poistovjetljivi akteri opipljive kemije (sjajan par Gere-Winger), naročito Majo. Do kraja obuke Majo postaje ne samo oficir, nego i džentlmen, te zavrijeđuje krila mlažnjaka da s Paulom poleti gore u nebo. Up Where We Belong.

U sjeni "Up Where We Belong" ostala je "Tunnel Of Love" Dire Straitsa koja u jednoj sceni sa Zackom i Paulom nježno zasvira sa zvučnika u baru. Scenarist filma je Douglas Day Stewart ("Plava laguna"). Zvijezda je postala i Winger koja je godinu kasnije glumila u "Vremenu nježnosti".
