Geneza “Prave romanse” seže iz Tarantinovog prvog i nedovršenog filma “Rođendan mog najboljeg prijatelja” (“My Best Friend’s Birthday”, 1987.). Tarantino je snimio film dok je radio u videoteci uz pomoć prijatelja Rogera Avaryja (direktor fotografije) s kojim je napisao “Pulp Fiction”.

Izvorno je “Rođendan mog najboljeg prijatelja” trajao 70 minuta, ali druga polovica filma je nestala u požaru, tako da je u optjecaju samo 36-minutna verzija koju možete pogledati i na YouTubeu. Sirovi, amaterski “studentski” crno-bijeli film otvara prozor u Tarantinov budući svijet i nešto je najbliže što je redatelj došao svojoj inačici “Trgovaca”, pa i “Edu Woodu”.

“My Best Friend’s Birthday” krasi dobra mjuza (Sweet i “The Ballroom Blitz”), a zbivanja pokreću dijalozi i ekscentrični likovi koji se često referiraju na filmove. Pored režije i scenarija, Tarantino se nalazi i ispred kamere, igrajući glavnu ulogu brzopričajućeg radijskog DJ-a Clarencea Poola.

Clarence u osnovnom zapletu planira svome prijatelju Mickeyju Burnettu (Craig Hamann) uljepšati rođendan tako da za njega unajmi “kolgerlu” Misty (Crystal Shaw) ne bi li ga oraspoložio nakon što ga je ostavila djevojka (Linda Kaye).

Clarence ima potencijalno romantičnu scenu s Misty na tragu Vincenta Vege i Mie Wallace u “Paklenom šundu” koja biva prekinuta taman kad se može razviti u nešto, a ne prekida je njezino predoziranje, nego “kraj” filma. Prije toga Misty otkriva kako ju je, da postane “kolgerla”, inspirirala Nancy Allen u “Odjevenoj da ubije”.

Povod je to da Tarantino kaže par riječi o obožavanom mu Brianu De Palmi. “Dressed To Kill” je jedan od plakata kultnih filmova koji vise na zidovima uz De Palmin “The Fury”, ali i npr. “Povratak Street Fightera” (Sonny Chiba!) te “Chato’s Land” i “The Evil That Men Do” s Charlesom Bronsonom.

Osim De Palme Tarantino priča i o Elvisu, recitirajući dijalog koji je recitirao Christian Slater kao Clarence u “True Romance”.  “Nisam peder, ali da mi moram poševiti nekog tipa, da mi život ovisi o tome, poševio bi Elvisa”, govori Clarence i upušta se u raspravu u vezi glumačkih (ne)sposobnosti kralja rock ‘n’ rolla kad mu kažu da nije bio dobar i spomenu Marlona Branda kao primjer glumca.

“Brando jest glumac, ali je imao neke govnaste filmove”, veli Clarence. Dijalozi su vrckavi u Tarantinovom stilu i među inima vrijedi izdvojiti “Izgledaš kao govno. Osjećam se kao proljev...” i “Tvoja guzica je trava, a ja sam kosilica”.

Šprehe su sulude, tipa da je Clarence razmišljao o samoubojstvu kad je imao tri godine i da ga je spasio sitcom “The Partridge Family”, situacije još luđe (šmrkanje “kokaina” u eteru”).  Tu je i Tarantinovo priznanje da ima “foot fetish”, kao i jedna scena tučnjave između Mickeyja i Mistyna crnog svodnika Clifforda (Al Harrell), amaterski vjesnik kung fu okršaja u “Kill Billu” i “Bilo jednom u... Hollywoodu”.

Sve to ima stanovitog šarma. Iako neispoliran, Tarantinov stil je prepoznatljiv i zarazan u “Rođendanu mog najboljeg prijatelja”. Jednom kad otkuca 36. minuta i film (naprasno) završi poljupcem Clarencea i Misty, gledatelju bude žao da napušta likove prije nego što ih je mogao bolje upoznati.

Geneza “Prave romanse” seže iz Tarantinovog prvog i nedovršenog filma “Rođendan mog najboljeg prijatelja” (“My Best Friend’s Birthday”, 1987.). Tarantino je snimio film dok je radio u videoteci uz pomoć prijatelja Rogera Avaryja (direktor fotografije) s kojim je napisao “Pulp Fiction”.

Izvorno je “Rođendan mog najboljeg prijatelja” trajao 70 minuta, ali druga polovica filma je nestala u požaru, tako da je u optjecaju samo 36-minutna verzija koju možete pogledati i na YouTubeu. Sirovi, amaterski “studentski” crno-bijeli film otvara prozor u Tarantinov budući svijet i nešto je najbliže što je redatelj došao svojoj inačici “Trgovaca”, pa i “Edu Woodu”.

“My Best Friend’s Birthday” krasi dobra mjuza (Sweet i “The Ballroom Blitz”), a zbivanja pokreću dijalozi i ekscentrični likovi koji se često referiraju na filmove. Pored režije i scenarija, Tarantino se nalazi i ispred kamere, igrajući glavnu ulogu brzopričajućeg radijskog DJ-a Clarencea Poola.

Clarence u osnovnom zapletu planira svome prijatelju Mickeyju Burnettu (Craig Hamann) uljepšati rođendan tako da za njega unajmi “kolgerlu” Misty (Crystal Shaw) ne bi li ga oraspoložio nakon što ga je ostavila djevojka (Linda Kaye).

Clarence ima potencijalno romantičnu scenu s Misty na tragu Vincenta Vege i Mie Wallace u “Paklenom šundu” koja biva prekinuta taman kad se može razviti u nešto, a ne prekida je njezino predoziranje, nego “kraj” filma. Prije toga Misty otkriva kako ju je, da postane “kolgerla”, inspirirala Nancy Allen u “Odjevenoj da ubije”.

Povod je to da Tarantino kaže par riječi o obožavanom mu Brianu De Palmi. “Dressed To Kill” je jedan od plakata kultnih filmova koji vise na zidovima uz De Palmin “The Fury”, ali i npr. “Povratak Street Fightera” (Sonny Chiba!) te “Chato’s Land” i “The Evil That Men Do” s Charlesom Bronsonom.

Osim De Palme Tarantino priča i o Elvisu, recitirajući dijalog koji je recitirao Christian Slater kao Clarence u “True Romance”.  “Nisam peder, ali da mi moram poševiti nekog tipa, da mi život ovisi o tome, poševio bi Elvisa”, govori Clarence i upušta se u raspravu u vezi glumačkih (ne)sposobnosti kralja rock ‘n’ rolla kad mu kažu da nije bio dobar i spomenu Marlona Branda kao primjer glumca.

“Brando jest glumac, ali je imao neke govnaste filmove”, veli Clarence. Dijalozi su vrckavi u Tarantinovom stilu i među inima vrijedi izdvojiti “Izgledaš kao govno. Osjećam se kao proljev...” i “Tvoja guzica je trava, a ja sam kosilica”.

Šprehe su sulude, tipa da je Clarence razmišljao o samoubojstvu kad je imao tri godine i da ga je spasio sitcom “The Partridge Family”, situacije još luđe (šmrkanje “kokaina” u eteru”).  Tu je i Tarantinovo priznanje da ima “foot fetish”, kao i jedna scena tučnjave između Mickeyja i Mistyna crnog svodnika Clifforda (Al Harrell), amaterski vjesnik kung fu okršaja u “Kill Billu” i “Bilo jednom u... Hollywoodu”.

Sve to ima stanovitog šarma. Iako neispoliran, Tarantinov stil je prepoznatljiv i zarazan u “Rođendanu mog najboljeg prijatelja”. Jednom kad otkuca 36. minuta i film (naprasno) završi poljupcem Clarencea i Misty, gledatelju bude žao da napušta likove prije nego što ih je mogao bolje upoznati.
