Želju za snimanjem nekog filma pjevačica Whitney Houston je izrazila svom producentu Cliveu Davisu tamo negdje na samom početku devedesetih i on joj je jednog dana predao scenarij. Film o Whitney "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" fino je opisao tu situaciju. Davis tutne scenarij "Tjelohranitelja" ("The Bodyguard", 1992.) u ruke Houston i pita je bi li bila spremna odgoditi svoje vjenčanje da snimi film.

"O čemu se radi?", pita Whitney. "Svjetski poznata pjevačica i njezin težak odnos s tjelohraniteljem", odgovara Davis. "Ne", kaže Houston, baci scenarij u koš i onda zastane. "Tko je tjelohranitelj", zanima se Whitney. "Kevin Costner", otkrije Davis. Houston brže-bolje posegne za scenarijem. "To znači da!"

Nije isključeno da je scena iz "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vjerna rekreacija stvarne reakcije Whitney, a svakako oslikava film, romantični akcijski triler redatelja Micka Jacksona ("Vulkan"). Tako postavljen, osnovni sinopsis "Tjelohranitelja" možda ne obećava bog-zna-što, ali s Costnerom u glavnoj ulozi to je već druga priča i Houston doista nije mogla dobiti bolju priliku za glumački debi "meta" vrste.

Costner je u tom periodu bio na vrhuncu karijere, oskarovac ("Ples s vukovima") i jedna od najvećih glumačkih zvijezda Hollywooda nakon velikih kinohitova "Nedodirljivi", "Robin Hood: Princ lopova" i "JFK", popularan kao Whitney u glazbenom svijetu.

Zanimljivo, scenarij je napisan još 1975. i scenarist Lawrence Kasdan ("Imperij uzvraća udarac", "Otimači izgubljenog kovčega", "Tjelesna strast", "Velika jeza", "Slučajni turist") imao je Stevea McQueena na umu za glavnu ulogu. Scenarij je u međuvremenu osvježen, vješto prilagođen vremenu nastanka i glazbenoj zvijezdi kalibra Houston, a Costner se prilagodio imidžu McQueena (frizura) i odlično skinuo njegov kulerski akcijski manirizam ("Bullitt", "Bijeg").

Prilagodba se tiče povijesti lika tjelohranitelja Franka Farmera. Frank je bivši agent tajne službe koji je čuvao Ronalda Reagana, ali nije bio na dužnosti kad je izvršen atentat na predsjednika 1981. i to sebi ne može oprostiti. Karakterizacija lika (kao i sam "The Bodyguard") mogla je poslužiti kao inspiracija za "Na vatrenoj liniji".

Farmera upoznajemo u post-festum akciji, kad se zaštitnički nadvio iznad svoga klijenta i spasio ga od nekog napadača. Pucnjevi se čuju prije nego vidimo Costnera s pištoljem u ruci, što sugerira da će "Tjelohranitelj" biti i akcijski intoniran i pripremiti Costnera za akcijašenje u "Vodenom svijetu" i kasnijim filmovima poput "3 dana za ubojstvo" i "Zločinačkog uma".

Svakako, Frank je akcijski lik čija se borbena sprema čuva i polako bilda tijekom filma kao Daltonova u "Kući na putu", a interesantno je da će se, kao takav, naći u priči s elementima trilera i romanse. Likovi poput njega znali su se snalaziti s trilerskim konceptima i prijetnjama nekog ubojice ("Na rubu", "Kobra", "Smrtonosna zona").

Koncept "Bodyguarda" jest u srži trilerski, odnosno triler je, žanrovski, primarni pokretač priče. Rachel Murron (Houston kao svojevrsna verzija same sebe), slavna pjevačica i odnedavno – metafilmski – glumica, dobiva anonimne prijetnje smrću u formi pisama i Farmer je angažiran da je zaštiti ("Čuli smo da ste najbolji..."), što on nevoljko prihvaća za 3000 dolara tjedno jer "ne radi u showbizu".

Rachelin opsesivni "stalker" je čak uspio ući na imanje pjevačice i masturbirati na njezinom krevetu, dakle uklapa se u psihologiju/patologiju likova iz trilera devedesetih ("Rt straha", "Kad jaganjci utihnu", "Potez lovca", "Sedam"...). Sa "stalkerom" Frank može nekako izaći na kraj, lakše nego sa showbiz svijetom i Murroničinim timom, poput PR agenta (Gary Kemp) koji se drži stava "Zaboravi prijetnje smrću, prestane li pjevati – mrtva je". A nije ni obučen za udovoljavanje zvijezdinih hirova.

"Ovdje sam da vas održim na životu, ne da vam pomažem u šopingu", odriješi Farmer.  Odnos između pjevačice i tjelohranitelja počinje naopako kao sudar utjelovitelja dvaju suprotnih svjetova, povučenog profesionalca i zvijezde pod konstantnim svjetlom reflektora, nekoga tko živi od obožavatelja i nekoga tko je tu da je zaštiti od poremećenih među njima.

Ipak, suprotnosti se privlače i među njima se razvija privlačnost, nakon čega akcijski lik, koji na nešto tako nije naviknut ("nikad ne miješaj posao s užitkom"), postaje protagonist romantične melodrame. No, stvar funkcionira zbog opipljive atrakcije između Costnera i Houston, njihove kemije. Veoma je dojmljiva scena kad se Rachelin nastup otme kontroli i Frank primi pjevačicu u zaštitničke ruke i prijeko potreban zagrljaj, učvrstivši uzajamno povjerenje, ali i privlačnost koja buja tijekom prvog spoja.

Kako je nezgodno da Rachel izađe s nekim vani, ona predlaže Franku da je izvede na "dejt" i on je odvodi u kino na njegov omiljeni film, Kurosawinu "Tjelesnu stražu" (gledao ga 62 puta), nakon čega će popiti pivo u kaubojskom baru i zaplesati sentiš na baladu "I Will Always Love You". Kad Murron nježno nasloni glavu na Farmerovo rame, jasno je da je ljubav rođena, a privlačnost je zapečaćena erotičnom scenom s katanom i svilenim šalom kod njega doma.

"The Bodyguard" funkcionira vrlo solidno kao triler s napetom završnicom na dodjeli Oscara, no iznenađujuće dirljivi ljubavni aspekt filma, u paketu s pogođeno sparenim glumcima i sjajnim pjesmama, diže ga znatno iznad prosjeka, na trenutke i čini romantično magičnim. Strastvena, izvanserijski otpjevana obrada "I Will Always Love You" pogađa sve prave note jedne velike (i nesretne) ljubavne priče.

Dvije nominacije za Oscara

Frank je filmofil, ali to je izgleda i Rachel koja na imanju drži model robota iz "Metropolisa". Film je osvojio čak dvije nominacije za Oscara u kategoriji najbolje originalne pjesme, za "I Have Nothing" i "Run To You", a poslužio je i kao inspiracija za kvalitetnu BBC-jevu seriju "Bodyguard" s Richardom Maddenom i Keeley Hawes.

Želju za snimanjem nekog filma pjevačica Whitney Houston je izrazila svom producentu Cliveu Davisu tamo negdje na samom početku devedesetih i on joj je jednog dana predao scenarij. Film o Whitney "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" fino je opisao tu situaciju. Davis tutne scenarij "Tjelohranitelja" ("The Bodyguard", 1992.) u ruke Houston i pita je bi li bila spremna odgoditi svoje vjenčanje da snimi film.

"O čemu se radi?", pita Whitney. "Svjetski poznata pjevačica i njezin težak odnos s tjelohraniteljem", odgovara Davis. "Ne", kaže Houston, baci scenarij u koš i onda zastane. "Tko je tjelohranitelj", zanima se Whitney. "Kevin Costner", otkrije Davis. Houston brže-bolje posegne za scenarijem. "To znači da!"

Nije isključeno da je scena iz "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vjerna rekreacija stvarne reakcije Whitney, a svakako oslikava film, romantični akcijski triler redatelja Micka Jacksona ("Vulkan"). Tako postavljen, osnovni sinopsis "Tjelohranitelja" možda ne obećava bog-zna-što, ali s Costnerom u glavnoj ulozi to je već druga priča i Houston doista nije mogla dobiti bolju priliku za glumački debi "meta" vrste.

Costner je u tom periodu bio na vrhuncu karijere, oskarovac ("Ples s vukovima") i jedna od najvećih glumačkih zvijezda Hollywooda nakon velikih kinohitova "Nedodirljivi", "Robin Hood: Princ lopova" i "JFK", popularan kao Whitney u glazbenom svijetu.

Zanimljivo, scenarij je napisan još 1975. i scenarist Lawrence Kasdan ("Imperij uzvraća udarac", "Otimači izgubljenog kovčega", "Tjelesna strast", "Velika jeza", "Slučajni turist") imao je Stevea McQueena na umu za glavnu ulogu. Scenarij je u međuvremenu osvježen, vješto prilagođen vremenu nastanka i glazbenoj zvijezdi kalibra Houston, a Costner se prilagodio imidžu McQueena (frizura) i odlično skinuo njegov kulerski akcijski manirizam ("Bullitt", "Bijeg").

Prilagodba se tiče povijesti lika tjelohranitelja Franka Farmera. Frank je bivši agent tajne službe koji je čuvao Ronalda Reagana, ali nije bio na dužnosti kad je izvršen atentat na predsjednika 1981. i to sebi ne može oprostiti. Karakterizacija lika (kao i sam "The Bodyguard") mogla je poslužiti kao inspiracija za "Na vatrenoj liniji".

Farmera upoznajemo u post-festum akciji, kad se zaštitnički nadvio iznad svoga klijenta i spasio ga od nekog napadača. Pucnjevi se čuju prije nego vidimo Costnera s pištoljem u ruci, što sugerira da će "Tjelohranitelj" biti i akcijski intoniran i pripremiti Costnera za akcijašenje u "Vodenom svijetu" i kasnijim filmovima poput "3 dana za ubojstvo" i "Zločinačkog uma".

Svakako, Frank je akcijski lik čija se borbena sprema čuva i polako bilda tijekom filma kao Daltonova u "Kući na putu", a interesantno je da će se, kao takav, naći u priči s elementima trilera i romanse. Likovi poput njega znali su se snalaziti s trilerskim konceptima i prijetnjama nekog ubojice ("Na rubu", "Kobra", "Smrtonosna zona").

Koncept "Bodyguarda" jest u srži trilerski, odnosno triler je, žanrovski, primarni pokretač priče. Rachel Murron (Houston kao svojevrsna verzija same sebe), slavna pjevačica i odnedavno – metafilmski – glumica, dobiva anonimne prijetnje smrću u formi pisama i Farmer je angažiran da je zaštiti ("Čuli smo da ste najbolji..."), što on nevoljko prihvaća za 3000 dolara tjedno jer "ne radi u showbizu".

Rachelin opsesivni "stalker" je čak uspio ući na imanje pjevačice i masturbirati na njezinom krevetu, dakle uklapa se u psihologiju/patologiju likova iz trilera devedesetih ("Rt straha", "Kad jaganjci utihnu", "Potez lovca", "Sedam"...). Sa "stalkerom" Frank može nekako izaći na kraj, lakše nego sa showbiz svijetom i Murroničinim timom, poput PR agenta (Gary Kemp) koji se drži stava "Zaboravi prijetnje smrću, prestane li pjevati – mrtva je". A nije ni obučen za udovoljavanje zvijezdinih hirova.

"Ovdje sam da vas održim na životu, ne da vam pomažem u šopingu", odriješi Farmer.  Odnos između pjevačice i tjelohranitelja počinje naopako kao sudar utjelovitelja dvaju suprotnih svjetova, povučenog profesionalca i zvijezde pod konstantnim svjetlom reflektora, nekoga tko živi od obožavatelja i nekoga tko je tu da je zaštiti od poremećenih među njima.

Ipak, suprotnosti se privlače i među njima se razvija privlačnost, nakon čega akcijski lik, koji na nešto tako nije naviknut ("nikad ne miješaj posao s užitkom"), postaje protagonist romantične melodrame. No, stvar funkcionira zbog opipljive atrakcije između Costnera i Houston, njihove kemije. Veoma je dojmljiva scena kad se Rachelin nastup otme kontroli i Frank primi pjevačicu u zaštitničke ruke i prijeko potreban zagrljaj, učvrstivši uzajamno povjerenje, ali i privlačnost koja buja tijekom prvog spoja.

Kako je nezgodno da Rachel izađe s nekim vani, ona predlaže Franku da je izvede na "dejt" i on je odvodi u kino na njegov omiljeni film, Kurosawinu "Tjelesnu stražu" (gledao ga 62 puta), nakon čega će popiti pivo u kaubojskom baru i zaplesati sentiš na baladu "I Will Always Love You". Kad Murron nježno nasloni glavu na Farmerovo rame, jasno je da je ljubav rođena, a privlačnost je zapečaćena erotičnom scenom s katanom i svilenim šalom kod njega doma.

"The Bodyguard" funkcionira vrlo solidno kao triler s napetom završnicom na dodjeli Oscara, no iznenađujuće dirljivi ljubavni aspekt filma, u paketu s pogođeno sparenim glumcima i sjajnim pjesmama, diže ga znatno iznad prosjeka, na trenutke i čini romantično magičnim. Strastvena, izvanserijski otpjevana obrada "I Will Always Love You" pogađa sve prave note jedne velike (i nesretne) ljubavne priče.

Dvije nominacije za Oscara

Frank je filmofil, ali to je izgleda i Rachel koja na imanju drži model robota iz "Metropolisa". Film je osvojio čak dvije nominacije za Oscara u kategoriji najbolje originalne pjesme, za "I Have Nothing" i "Run To You", a poslužio je i kao inspiracija za kvalitetnu BBC-jevu seriju "Bodyguard" s Richardom Maddenom i Keeley Hawes.

"O čemu se radi?", pita Whitney. "Svjetski poznata pjevačica i njezin težak odnos s tjelohraniteljem", odgovara Davis. "Ne", kaže Houston, baci scenarij u koš i onda zastane. "Tko je tjelohranitelj", zanima se Whitney. "Kevin Costner", otkrije Davis. Houston brže-bolje posegne za scenarijem. "To znači da!"
