Bizarna istinita priča o krađi Goyine slike “Vojvoda od Wellingtona”, vrijedne 140 tisuća funti, poslužila je kao inspiracija za britanski film poznatog redatelja Rogera Michella (“Ja u ljubav vjerujem”, “Kobno prestrojavanje”) koji je, nažalost, umro nakon snimanja.

Priča datira s početka šezdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća, točnije 1961., kad je 57-godišnji Kempton Bunton priznao da je upravo on ukrao “Vojvodu od Wellingtona” iz londonske Nacionalne galerije kad je čuo da ju je kupio bogati američki kolekcionar za 140.000 funti s namjerom da je odnese u SAD, a od njega ga je za istu sumu otkupila britanska vlada da slika ostane u Londonu.

Bunton to nije učinio da je zadrži i proda. Ne, on je imao plemeniti cilj. Htio je promijeniti svijet i pomoći ljudima tako što je, za povrat ukradene slike, tražio od britanske vlade da posveti više pažnje starijim stanovnicima, odnosno omogući umirovljenicima i ratnim veteranima besplatnu televiziju, za što se inače aktivistički zalagao nizom kampanja protiv TV pretplata.

Prema ovoj je priči Michell režirao šarmantan i dobrodošlo staromodan populistički film “Vojvoda” (“The Duke”), s odličnim Jimom Broadbentom u ulozi Kemptona i oskarovkom Helen Mirren kao gospođom Bunton. “Vojvoda” je snimljen za najmanje jedno vrlo ugodno gledanje na razmeđu zabavne komedije i emotivne socijalne drame o malim “blue collar” ljudima niže klase.

To je ostvarenje u tradiciji britanskih filmova devedesetih i ranih dvijetisućitih, kao što su “Skidajte se do kraja”, “Brassed Off”, “Djevojke s duplerice”, “Opake čizme”... Redatelj Michell pronalazi “light touch” i humor u priči koja je u rukama jednog Kena Loacha (“Ja, Daniel Blake”, “Oprostite, mimoišli smo se”) mogla biti pretvorena i u tešku, društveno angažiranu dramu od velikih riječi, a ovdje je dramski angažman u podlozi radnje, njezin suptilni pokretač.

Uvodni trenuci filma najavljuju da će Michellova dramatizacija priče iz života biti prožeta humorom i glumačko-režijskom energijom (predstavljanje Kemptona u sudnici, tehnika podijeljenih ekrana). “Nisam kriv”, tvrdi Kempton i svojim reakcijama na pitanja suda nasmijava okolinu.

Kad se radnja vrati unatrag, upoznajemo glavnog lika i obitelj Bunton, njegovu suprugu Dorothy te sinove Jackieja (Fionn Whitehead; “Dunkirk”, “Putnici”) i Kennyja (Jack Bandeira; “Venom 2”). Kempton radi kao taksist i piše autobiografske drame o tugovanju kako bi lakše prebolio smrt kćeri, što Dorothy ne odobrava jer njihova je tuga samo njihova.

Sentimentalna obiteljska drama Buntonovih uglavnom se vješto kontrastira s humorom, onako kao što Michell montažno preklapa mišljenje stručnjaka i Kemptona o slici “vojvode od vražjeg Wellingtona”, dakle od “izvanredan primjerak Goyina kasnijeg razdoblja” do “ružni portret španjolskog pijanca”.

Wellington nije “ustuknuo” kod bitke za Waterloo, ali Kemptonu smeta to što je “vojnike tretirao kao ološ i glasao protiv univerzalnog biračkog prava”, stoga zamjera britanskoj vladi da otkupljuje sliku za tako visoku sumu, posebice što s tim novcem stariji ljudi, poput njega, mogu platiti “tko zna koliko televizijskih pretplata” za koje se putem aktivističkih kampanja i bori sa sinom Jackiejem.

Scena krađe slike duhovita je i “Vojvoda od Wellingtona” uzet je ispred nosa još vrjednijeg Munchova “Krika”, koji funkcionira kao slikoviti komentar zbivanja za vrisnuti od smijeha. Sličan efekt Michell postiže i kad se Kenny poseksa s djevojkom kraj ormara gdje je Kempton sakrio sliku pa ispada da ih oko vojvode ćiri kroz “špijunku”. A policija, još malo humora, smatra da je za krađu odgovorna “dobro financirana međunarodna kriminalna banda” ili “bivši komandos, specijalac”, netko tko je “u formi”.

Izraz Kemptonova lica dok sluša to na TV-u govori tisuću riječi, ali Michell odbija da film skrene u apsurdnu komediju i nivelira humor s melankoličnom (obiteljskom/socijalnom) dramom, respektirajući borbu malog čovjeka protiv velikog sustava i familiju Bunton predvođenu svojevrsnim Robinom Hoodom koji je “htio pomoći najugroženijim pripadnicima društva”. Michell može biti zadovoljan svojim posljednjim filmom.

Vojvoda kod Dr. Noa

Slika “Vojvode od Wellingtona” našla se u prvom Bond-filmu “Dr. No” iz 1962. i Sean Connery načas se zagleda u nju kad dođe u goste kod titularnog negativca. Kamera će prikazati Kemptona i Dorothy u “Vojvodi” kako gledaju upravo tu scenu “Dr. Noa” u kinu.

Bizarna istinita priča o krađi Goyine slike “Vojvoda od Wellingtona”, vrijedne 140 tisuća funti, poslužila je kao inspiracija za britanski film poznatog redatelja Rogera Michella (“Ja u ljubav vjerujem”, “Kobno prestrojavanje”) koji je, nažalost, umro nakon snimanja.

Priča datira s početka šezdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća, točnije 1961., kad je 57-godišnji Kempton Bunton priznao da je upravo on ukrao “Vojvodu od Wellingtona” iz londonske Nacionalne galerije kad je čuo da ju je kupio bogati američki kolekcionar za 140.000 funti s namjerom da je odnese u SAD, a od njega ga je za istu sumu otkupila britanska vlada da slika ostane u Londonu.

Bunton to nije učinio da je zadrži i proda. Ne, on je imao plemeniti cilj. Htio je promijeniti svijet i pomoći ljudima tako što je, za povrat ukradene slike, tražio od britanske vlade da posveti više pažnje starijim stanovnicima, odnosno omogući umirovljenicima i ratnim veteranima besplatnu televiziju, za što se inače aktivistički zalagao nizom kampanja protiv TV pretplata.

Prema ovoj je priči Michell režirao šarmantan i dobrodošlo staromodan populistički film “Vojvoda” (“The Duke”), s odličnim Jimom Broadbentom u ulozi Kemptona i oskarovkom Helen Mirren kao gospođom Bunton. “Vojvoda” je snimljen za najmanje jedno vrlo ugodno gledanje na razmeđu zabavne komedije i emotivne socijalne drame o malim “blue collar” ljudima niže klase.

To je ostvarenje u tradiciji britanskih filmova devedesetih i ranih dvijetisućitih, kao što su “Skidajte se do kraja”, “Brassed Off”, “Djevojke s duplerice”, “Opake čizme”... Redatelj Michell pronalazi “light touch” i humor u priči koja je u rukama jednog Kena Loacha (“Ja, Daniel Blake”, “Oprostite, mimoišli smo se”) mogla biti pretvorena i u tešku, društveno angažiranu dramu od velikih riječi, a ovdje je dramski angažman u podlozi radnje, njezin suptilni pokretač.

Uvodni trenuci filma najavljuju da će Michellova dramatizacija priče iz života biti prožeta humorom i glumačko-režijskom energijom (predstavljanje Kemptona u sudnici, tehnika podijeljenih ekrana). “Nisam kriv”, tvrdi Kempton i svojim reakcijama na pitanja suda nasmijava okolinu.

Kad se radnja vrati unatrag, upoznajemo glavnog lika i obitelj Bunton, njegovu suprugu Dorothy te sinove Jackieja (Fionn Whitehead; “Dunkirk”, “Putnici”) i Kennyja (Jack Bandeira; “Venom 2”). Kempton radi kao taksist i piše autobiografske drame o tugovanju kako bi lakše prebolio smrt kćeri, što Dorothy ne odobrava jer njihova je tuga samo njihova.

Sentimentalna obiteljska drama Buntonovih uglavnom se vješto kontrastira s humorom, onako kao što Michell montažno preklapa mišljenje stručnjaka i Kemptona o slici “vojvode od vražjeg Wellingtona”, dakle od “izvanredan primjerak Goyina kasnijeg razdoblja” do “ružni portret španjolskog pijanca”.

Wellington nije “ustuknuo” kod bitke za Waterloo, ali Kemptonu smeta to što je “vojnike tretirao kao ološ i glasao protiv univerzalnog biračkog prava”, stoga zamjera britanskoj vladi da otkupljuje sliku za tako visoku sumu, posebice što s tim novcem stariji ljudi, poput njega, mogu platiti “tko zna koliko televizijskih pretplata” za koje se putem aktivističkih kampanja i bori sa sinom Jackiejem.

Scena krađe slike duhovita je i “Vojvoda od Wellingtona” uzet je ispred nosa još vrjednijeg Munchova “Krika”, koji funkcionira kao slikoviti komentar zbivanja za vrisnuti od smijeha. Sličan efekt Michell postiže i kad se Kenny poseksa s djevojkom kraj ormara gdje je Kempton sakrio sliku pa ispada da ih oko vojvode ćiri kroz “špijunku”. A policija, još malo humora, smatra da je za krađu odgovorna “dobro financirana međunarodna kriminalna banda” ili “bivši komandos, specijalac”, netko tko je “u formi”.

Izraz Kemptonova lica dok sluša to na TV-u govori tisuću riječi, ali Michell odbija da film skrene u apsurdnu komediju i nivelira humor s melankoličnom (obiteljskom/socijalnom) dramom, respektirajući borbu malog čovjeka protiv velikog sustava i familiju Bunton predvođenu svojevrsnim Robinom Hoodom koji je “htio pomoći najugroženijim pripadnicima društva”. Michell može biti zadovoljan svojim posljednjim filmom.

Slika “Vojvode od Wellingtona” našla se u prvom Bond-filmu “Dr. No” iz 1962. i Sean Connery načas se zagleda u nju kad dođe u goste kod titularnog negativca. Kamera će prikazati Kemptona i Dorothy u “Vojvodi” kako gledaju upravo tu scenu “Dr. Noa” u kinu.

Bizarna istinita priča o krađi Goyine slike “Vojvoda od Wellingtona”, vrijedne 140 tisuća funti, poslužila je kao inspiracija za britanski film poznatog redatelja Rogera Michella (“Ja u ljubav vjerujem”, “Kobno prestrojavanje”) koji je, nažalost, umro nakon snimanja.

Priča datira s početka šezdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća, točnije 1961., kad je 57-godišnji Kempton Bunton priznao da je upravo on ukrao “Vojvodu od Wellingtona” iz londonske Nacionalne galerije kad je čuo da ju je kupio bogati američki kolekcionar za 140.000 funti s namjerom da je odnese u SAD, a od njega ga je za istu sumu otkupila britanska vlada da slika ostane u Londonu.
