Kad je Patrick Marquette sa Sveučilišta Missouri prije više od dva desetljeća počeo istraživati ​​snježne oluje s grmljavinom, obično je nailazio na odgovore poput: "Hvala vam što ste ovo učinili, znao sam da sam vidio jednu i nitko mi nije vjerovao" ili "Ne postoji tako nešto, samo uzalud trošite naš novac.", piše Nationalgeographic.rs.

No vrijeme je pokazalo da su on i neki njegovi kolege bili u pravu kada je u pitanju pojava grmljavine i munja tijekom snježne oluje, te da oni predstavljaju atmosferski fenomen s ozbiljnim implikacijama.

Što uzrokuje snježne oluje s grmljavinom?

Znanstvenici vjeruju da se snježne oluje javljaju na sličan način kao i ljetne grmljavinske oluje: promjene u atmosferi uzrokuju podizanje vlažnog i relativno toplog zraka, koji se kondenzira i stvara oblake ispunjene hladnom vodom i sitnim kristalima leda. Što se više ta smjesa unutar oblaka sudara, veća je šansa da će se stvoriti električni naboj koji će na kraju rezultirati munjama i gromovima.

No, Sebastian Harkema sa Sveučilišta u Alabami, koji proučava ovaj fenomen, tvrdi da još uvijek ne znamo sa sigurnošću kako i zašto se ovaj proces događa zimi. Tijekom zimske oluje, zrak blizu tla je vrlo hladan, a kada se digne u još hladniju atmosferu, proizvodi manje oblaka ispunjenih hladnom vodom i sitnim kristalima za koje se vjeruje da su preduvjet za formiranje oluje.

Koliko je ovaj fenomen rijedak?

Razumijevanje ovog rijetkog fenomena bio je izazov za istraživače, jer se o njemu nije znalo gotovo ništa. A situaciju je dodatno zakomplicirala činjenica da snijeg jako dobro upija zvučne valove.

Ipak, broj izvješća o grmljavini tijekom snježnih oluja povećao se u desetljećima otkako je Marquette započeo svoje istraživanje: "Čini se kao da svaka dva tjedna tijekom zime netko objavi video toga na svom Instagramu. Događa li se to stvarno češće ili više nego što smo primijetili prije?"

Može se reći da su obje tvrdnje istinite. Harkemanov rad pokazao je da visoki radijski tornjevi koji provode struju mogu biti odgovorni za više snijega u urbanim područjima. Ove nove tehnologije pomažu znanstvenicima da točno odrede gdje se grmljavinska oluja događa u bilo kojem trenutku. Satelitski geostacionarni maper munja može detektirati njihove bljeskove na cijeloj hemisferi, a ako se preklapaju sa snježnim padalinama, to znači da je detektirana snježna grmljavinska oluja.

Herkeman kaže da je ovaj fenomen posebno čest u Coloradu, gornjim Velikim ravnicama i Velikim jezerima, gdje vjetroturbine proizvode električnu energiju. Satelitski geostacionarni maper munja može detektirati njihove bljeskove na cijeloj hemisferi, a ako se preklapaju sa snježnim padalinama, to znači da je detektirana snježna grmljavinska oluja.

Herkeman kaže da je ovaj fenomen posebno čest u Coloradu, gornjim Velikim ravnicama i Velikim jezerima, gdje vjetroturbine proizvode električnu energiju. Ali nepobitna je činjenica da se to može dogoditi bilo gdje - čak i u relativno toploj Alabami: "Kad pada snijeg, postoji prilično dobra vjerojatnost da bude popraćen grmljavinom.", piše Nationalgeographic.rs.
