U mnogim zemljama nejednakosti u prihodima i bogatstvu rastu od osamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća. U dosad najopsežnijoj analizi, koja se temelji na podacima iz 11 zemalja s visokim dohotkom (Australija, Austrija, Kanada, Francuska, Njemačka, Italija, Nizozemska, Novi Zeland, Švicarska, Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo i SAD), otkrili su da političari općenito žive dulje od populacije koju predstavljaju. U gotovo svim zemljama, političari su imali sličnu smrtnost kao i opća populacija u kasnom 19. i ranom 20. stoljeću. Ali tijekom druge polovine 20. stoljeća, životni vijek političara rastao je brže, što znači da su u svim zemljama koje smo proučavali živjeli dulje od opće populacije.

Dok se očekivani životni vijek razlikuje od zemlje do zemlje, mnogo su manje varijacije u životnom vijeku političara. U većini zemalja preostali očekivani životni vijek političara u dobi od 45 godina je oko 40 godina. Očekivani životni vijek opće javnosti u različitim je zemljama niži i raznolikiji (u rasponu od 34,5 godina u SAD-u do 37,8 godina u Australiji). Trenutačno političari mogu očekivati ​​da će živjeti između tri i sedam godina dulje od javnosti. Zašto političari žive dulje? Iako ove trendove djelomično mogu objasniti razlike u prihodima i bogatstvu, čini se da nisu jedini čimbenik. Nejednakost dohotka (mjerena udjelom ukupnog dohotka koji pripada najbogatijima u društvu) počela je rasti 1980-ih. Nasuprot tome, razlike u životnom vijeku između političara i javnosti počele su se povećavati već 1940-ih. Prednost političara može biti posljedica niza čimbenika, uključujući razlike u standardima zdravstvene skrbi te čimbenike načina života kao što su pušenje i prehrana.

Cigarete su bile vrlo popularne u prvoj polovini 20. stoljeća, a do 1950-ih pušenje je prevladavalo u svim slojevima društva. To više nije slučaj. Mjere javnog zdravstva, počevši od zabrane reklamiranja duhana, znače da su stope pušenja pale, posebno među naprednijim profesionalnim skupinama, kakvu čine i političari. Također je moguće da je uvođenje novih metoda političke promidžbe, uključujući televizijsko emitiranje i društvene mreže, promijenilo tip osobe koja je postala političar. Žene općenito žive dulje od muškaraca, ali u većini zemalja podaci o političarkama dostupni su tek nakon 1960. Otkrili smo da su trendovi razlika u životnom vijeku između političara i opće populacije slični za žene i muškarce. U mnogim zemljama javnost očekuje transparentnost i otkrivanje zarada političara. Ostale prednosti koje imaju, poput duljeg životnog vijeka, bile su puno manje cijenjene.

Studija se, objašnjavaju autori, usredotočila samo na političare u demokratskim zemljama s visokim prihodima, u kojima su podaci bili lako dostupni. U dosad najopsežnijoj analizi, koja se temelji na podacima iz 11 zemalja s visokim dohotkom (Australija, Austrija, Kanada, Francuska, Njemačka, Italija, Nizozemska, Novi Zeland, Švicarska, Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo i SAD), otkrili su da političari općenito žive dulje od populacije koju predstavljaju. Prethodno su slične studije koje su pratile dugoročne trendove nejednakosti u zdravlju bile usmjerene na samo nekoliko zemalja, poput Švedske i Nizozemske. Nova se studija, pak, temeljila na više od 57.000 političara, uz korištenje povijesnih podataka koji su u nekim slučajevima datirali dva stoljeća unatrag.

U gotovo svim zemljama, političari su imali sličnu smrtnost kao i opća populacija u kasnom 19. i ranom 20. stoljeću. Ali tijekom druge polovine 20. stoljeća, životni vijek političara rastao je brže, što znači da su u svim zemljama koje smo proučavali živjeli dulje od opće populacije.

Dok se očekivani životni vijek razlikuje od zemlje do zemlje, mnogo su manje varijacije u životnom vijeku političara. U većini zemalja preostali očekivani životni vijek političara u dobi od 45 godina je oko 40 godina. Očekivani životni vijek opće javnosti u različitim je zemljama niži i raznolikiji (u rasponu od 34,5 godina u SAD-u do 37,8 godina u Australiji). Trenutačno političari mogu očekivati ​​da će živjeti između tri i sedam godina dulje od javnosti. Tijekom većeg dijela 20. stoljeća preostali životni vijek 45-godišnjih političara u svim zemljama s dostupnim podacima povećao se u prosjeku za 14,6 godina. Za opću populaciju u istim zemljama prosječno povećanje iznosilo je 10,2 godine.

Zašto političari žive dulje? Iako ove trendove djelomično mogu objasniti razlike u prihodima i bogatstvu, čini se da nisu jedini čimbenik. Nejednakost dohotka (mjerena udjelom ukupnog dohotka koji pripada najbogatijima u društvu) počela je rasti 1980-ih. Nasuprot tome, razlike u životnom vijeku između političara i javnosti počele su se povećavati već 1940-ih. Prednost političara može biti posljedica niza čimbenika, uključujući razlike u standardima zdravstvene skrbi te čimbenike načina života kao što su pušenje i prehrana.

Cigarete su bile vrlo popularne u prvoj polovini 20. stoljeća, a do 1950-ih pušenje je prevladavalo u svim slojevima društva. To više nije slučaj. Mjere javnog zdravstva, počevši od zabrane reklamiranja duhana, znače da su stope pušenja pale, posebno među naprednijim profesionalnim skupinama, kakvu čine i političari. Također je moguće da je uvođenje novih metoda političke promidžbe, uključujući televizijsko emitiranje i društvene mreže, promijenilo tip osobe koja je postala političar. Žene općenito žive dulje od muškaraca, ali u većini zemalja podaci o političarkama dostupni su tek nakon 1960. Otkrili smo da su trendovi razlika u životnom vijeku između političara i opće populacije slični za žene i muškarce. U mnogim zemljama javnost očekuje transparentnost i otkrivanje zarada političara. Ostale prednosti koje imaju, poput duljeg životnog vijeka, bile su puno manje cijenjene.

Studija se, objašnjavaju autori, usredotočila samo na političare u demokratskim zemljama s visokim prihodima, u kojima su podaci bili lako dostupni. Provođenje više analiza, posebno zemalja s niskim i srednjim dohotkom, moglo bi poboljšati razumijevanje globalnih trendova zdravstvene nejednakosti te pomoći u pronalaženju rješenja, zaključuje The Conversation.
