U blizini grada Dumbele u središnjoj provinciji Šri Lanke, na zaravnom vrhu monolitne stene visoke 180 metara, koja se izdiže iz džungle i dominira okolinom, nalazi se drevni grad, piše National Geographic.
Stijena Sigirya je ostatak očvrslog magmatskog čepa iz davno ugašenog vulkana, formirana prije dva milijuna godina. Njena okolina naseljena je od prije oko 20.000 godina prije naše ere, a njene pećine korištene su kao skloništa i svetišta.

Grad na vrhu sagradio je u petom stoljeću poslije Krista kralj Kashyapa I. koji je neko vrijeme s tog mjesta i vladao. Željan vlasti zbacio je s prijestolja svog oca, moćnog Datusena, ubivši ga, dok je njegov brat, pored kojeg je silom preuzeo prijestolje, pobjegao u Indiju.
Živeći u stalnom strahu od bratovog povratka, izgradio je prijestolnicu na stijeni kako bi imao stalan pogled na okolinu. Kashyapa je živio izolirano u svojoj raskošnoj palači i uživao u velikom bogatstvu. Gotovo 200 stepenica vodi do vrha stijene, a do danas su se na ulazu u palaču sačuvale dvije goleme kamene lavlje šape, a istraživanja su potvrdila da se u palaču ulazilo kroz lavlju čeljust. Sam rub stijene bio je opasan zidom, a unutar zidina je kompleks bio podijeljen na tri dijela.

Područje Gornje palače zauzimalo je najviši, sjeverozapadni dio, područje Donje palače zauzimalo je donji, sjeveroistočni dio, dok je treći dio kompleksa bogat vrtovima i voćnjacima na južnom kraju u kojima se nalazi razno voće. a uzgajalo se i ukrasno bilje.
Vrtovi Sigiriya među najstarijima su na svijetu, a bili su i među najveličanstvenijima svog vremena. Vrtni kompleks se sastojao od tri dijela: vodenog, terasastog i kamenog.

Voda se sastojala od brojnih fontana i bazena u kojima su se kupale kraljeve konkubine, kojih je, prema legendi, bilo čak 500. O inženjerskom pothvatu ovog sustava bazena, vrtova i fontana dovoljno govori činjenica da rezervoari i podzemne cijevi kojima su se punili i danas funkcioniraju.
U kamenim vrtovima nalazio se amfiteatar u kojem je kralj imao svoje u klesano kameno prijestolje. Vrtovi s terasama bili su poredani oko stijene i vode.
Kashyapa je na kraju počinio samoubojstvo, a prijestolnica je vraćena u ravnicu Anuradapuri, gdje je i bila prije. Njegova veličanstvena palača, poznata po svom bogatstvu i luksuzu, opljačkana je i pretvorena u budistički samostan.

Grad na vrhu sagradio je u petom stoljeću poslije Krista kralj Kashyapa I. koji je neko vrijeme s tog mjesta i vladao. Željan vlasti zbacio je s prijestolja svog oca, moćnog Datusena, ubivši ga, dok je njegov brat, pored kojeg je silom preuzeo prijestolje, pobjegao u Indiju.
Živeći u stalnom strahu od bratovog povratka, izgradio je prijestolnicu na stijeni kako bi imao stalan pogled na okolinu. Kashyapa je živio izolirano u svojoj raskošnoj palači i uživao u velikom bogatstvu. Gotovo 200 stepenica vodi do vrha stijene, a do danas su se na ulazu u palaču sačuvale dvije goleme kamene lavlje šape, a istraživanja su potvrdila da se u palaču ulazilo kroz lavlju čeljust. Sam rub stijene bio je opasan zidom, a unutar zidina je kompleks bio podijeljen na tri dijela.

Područje Gornje palače zauzimalo je najviši, sjeverozapadni dio, područje Donje palače zauzimalo je donji, sjeveroistočni dio, dok je treći dio kompleksa bogat vrtovima i voćnjacima na južnom kraju u kojima se nalazi razno voće. a uzgajalo se i ukrasno bilje.
Vrtovi Sigiriya među najstarijima su na svijetu, a bili su i među najveličanstvenijima svog vremena. Vrtni kompleks se sastojao od tri dijela: vodenog, terasastog i kamenog.

Voda se sastojala od brojnih fontana i bazena u kojima su se kupale kraljeve konkubine, kojih je, prema legendi, bilo čak 500. O inženjerskom pothvatu ovog sustava bazena, vrtova i fontana dovoljno govori činjenica da rezervoari i podzemne cijevi kojima su se punili i danas funkcioniraju.
U kamenim vrtovima nalazio se amfiteatar u kojem je kralj imao svoje u klesano kameno prijestolje. Vrtovi s terasama bili su poredani oko stijene i vode.
Kashyapa je na kraju počinio samoubojstvo, a prijestolnica je vraćena u ravnicu Anuradapuri, gdje je i bila prije. Njegova veličanstvena palača, poznata po svom bogatstvu i luksuzu, opljačkana je i pretvorena u budistički samostan.
