Najnovija studija s Harvarda sugerira da se nazire kraj potrazi za sprječavanjem i liječenjem multiple skleroze, progresivne upalne bolesti središnjeg živčanog sustava koja pogađa 2,8 milijuna ljudi na svijetu i za koju do sada nema lijeka.
Studija je potvrdila hipotezu o povezanosti te bolesti s Epstein-Barrovim virusom, članom grupe herpes virusa, poznatom kao uzročnikom mononukleoze, objavljeno je u časopisu Science, prenosi Zdravlje.

“Povezanost ovog virusa i multiple skleroze istraživala je grupa znanstvenika nekoliko godina, a ovo je prva studija koja daje uvjerljive dokaze uzročnosti”, izjavio je autor studije, epidemiolog Alberto Ascherio.
Rezultate studije ocijenio je velikim korakom koji daje nadu da se većina slučajeva multiple skleroze može spriječiti zaustavljanjem infekcije Epstein-Barrovim virusom i da bi ciljanje tog virusa moglo dovesti do otkrića lijeka za multiplu sklerozu.

Teškoću u povezivanju EBV-a i multiple skleroze predstavljali su poznati podaci da EBV inficira velik postotak odraslog stanovništva, dok je multipla skleroza relativno rijetka bolest.
Istraživanje je provedeno na više od deset milijuna odraslih mladih osoba u američkoj vojsci i identificirano je 955 osoba kojima je tijekom službe dijagnosticirana multipla skleroza. Pokazalo se da se rizik od bolesti povećao 32 puta nakon infekcije EBV-om, a ostao je nepromijenjen nakon infekcije drugim virusima. Serumske razine lakog lanca neurofilamenata, biomarkera degeneracije živaca tipične za multiplu sklerozu, porasle su samo nakon EBV infekcije.

Ti se rezultati, kažu znanstvenici, ne mogu objasniti niti jednim poznatim čimbenikom rizika za multiplu sklerozu i upućuju na EBV kao na njezin vodeći uzrok.
“Trenutno ne postoji način da se učinkovito spriječi ili liječi EBV infekcija, ali cjepivo protiv tog virusa ili ciljani antivirusni lijekovi specifični za EBV mogli bi u konačnici spriječiti ili izliječiti multiplu sklerozu”, smatra Ascherio, prenosi Zdravlje.

Teškoću u povezivanju EBV-a i multiple skleroze predstavljali su poznati podaci da EBV inficira velik postotak odraslog stanovništva, dok je multipla skleroza relativno rijetka bolest.
Istraživanje je provedeno na više od deset milijuna odraslih mladih osoba u američkoj vojsci i identificirano je 955 osoba kojima je tijekom službe dijagnosticirana multipla skleroza. Pokazalo se da se rizik od bolesti povećao 32 puta nakon infekcije EBV-om, a ostao je nepromijenjen nakon infekcije drugim virusima. Serumske razine lakog lanca neurofilamenata, biomarkera degeneracije živaca tipične za multiplu sklerozu, porasle su samo nakon EBV infekcije.

Ti se rezultati, kažu znanstvenici, ne mogu objasniti niti jednim poznatim čimbenikom rizika za multiplu sklerozu i upućuju na EBV kao na njezin vodeći uzrok.
“Trenutno ne postoji način da se učinkovito spriječi ili liječi EBV infekcija, ali cjepivo protiv tog virusa ili ciljani antivirusni lijekovi specifični za EBV mogli bi u konačnici spriječiti ili izliječiti multiplu sklerozu”, smatra Ascherio, prenosi Zdravlje.
