Znanstvenici su otkrili točan odnos između šećera i raka otkrivajući da je način na koji stanice raka razgrađuju šećer povezan sa stimulacijom rasta tumora, prenosi IFLScience.
Stanice raka imaju tendenciju proizvoditi energiju drugačije od normalnih stanica – koriste proces koji uključuje fermentaciju glukoze u laktat, a ne obično disanje.
Svaka stanica u tijelu treba šećer da bi preživjela. Ali čini se da stanice raka zahtijevaju više od zdravih stanica. Čini se i da brže razgrađuju šećer. Mehanizam brzog metaboliziranja šećera kod raka poznat je kao Warburgov učinak.
Znanstvenici su se dugo pitali je li ovaj fenomen povezan s agresivnošću rasta tumora.
- Naše istraživanje otkriva kako hiperaktivna konzumacija šećera u kancerogenim stanicama dovodi do začaranog kruga kontinuirane stimulacije razvoja i rasta raka - objasnio je autor studije, profesor Johan Thevelein iz belgijskog VIB-KU Leuven Centra za biologiju raka.
- Dakle, može se objasniti korelacija između jačine Warburgovog učinka i agresivnosti tumora. Ova veza između šećera i raka ima velike posljedice. Naši rezultati pružaju temelj za buduća istraživanja u ovoj domeni, koja se sada mogu provoditi s mnogo preciznijim fokusom - naglasio je profesor.
Dosad nije bilo jasno je li Warburgov učinak samo simptom raka ili bi mogao utjecati na rast tumora. Nova studija pokazuje da Warburgov učinak zapravo potiče rast kancerogenih tumora - iako to ni na koji način ne znači da šećer uzrokuje rak. Nalazi su objavljeni u časopisu Nature Communications.
Kako bi proveli svoje istraživanje, znanstvenici su koristili kvasac kao model organizma. Kvasac također proizvodi energiju iz šećera putem fermentacije, baš kao što to čine stanice raka. Također sadrži 'Ras' proteine koji se nalaze u raku.
Jedna od uloga Ras proteina u našim tijelima je kontrola rasta stanica. Ako geni koji ih kontroliraju mutiraju, Ras proteini mogu postati trajno aktivni, uzrokujući prevelik rast stanica, a time i nekontroliranu proliferaciju stanica raka.
Dakle, koristeći kvasac, istraživači su pogledali odnos između Rasa i metabolizma visokog šećera.
- Glavna prednost korištenja kvasca bila je ta što na naše istraživanje nisu utjecali dodatni regulatorni mehanizmi stanica sisavaca, koji skrivaju ključne temeljne procese. Tako smo uspjeli ciljati ovaj proces u stanicama kvasca i potvrditi njegovu prisutnost u stanicama sisavaca - objasnio je Profesor Thevelein.
Ova su otkrića vrlo uzbudljiva u smislu budućnosti istraživanja raka, jer znamo više o odnosu raka sa šećerom, ali napredak u istraživanju ne mora nužno biti jednak proboju u medicini.
Pojačava li povećani unos šećera rast raka ili bi se sustav razgradnje šećera mogao prekinuti, još uvijek su pitanja na koja nema odgovora.

Znanstvenici su otkrili točan odnos između šećera i raka otkrivajući da je način na koji stanice raka razgrađuju šećer povezan sa stimulacijom rasta tumora, prenosi IFLScience.
Stanice raka imaju tendenciju proizvoditi energiju drugačije od normalnih stanica – koriste proces koji uključuje fermentaciju glukoze u laktat, a ne obično disanje.
Svaka stanica u tijelu treba šećer da bi preživjela. Ali čini se da stanice raka zahtijevaju više od zdravih stanica. Čini se i da brže razgrađuju šećer. Mehanizam brzog metaboliziranja šećera kod raka poznat je kao Warburgov učinak.
Znanstvenici su se dugo pitali je li ovaj fenomen povezan s agresivnošću rasta tumora.
- Naše istraživanje otkriva kako hiperaktivna konzumacija šećera u kancerogenim stanicama dovodi do začaranog kruga kontinuirane stimulacije razvoja i rasta raka - objasnio je autor studije, profesor Johan Thevelein iz belgijskog VIB-KU Leuven Centra za biologiju raka.
- Dakle, može se objasniti korelacija između jačine Warburgovog učinka i agresivnosti tumora. Ova veza između šećera i raka ima velike posljedice. Naši rezultati pružaju temelj za buduća istraživanja u ovoj domeni, koja se sada mogu provoditi s mnogo preciznijim fokusom - naglasio je profesor.
Dosad nije bilo jasno je li Warburgov učinak samo simptom raka ili bi mogao utjecati na rast tumora. Nova studija pokazuje da Warburgov učinak zapravo potiče rast kancerogenih tumora - iako to ni na koji način ne znači da šećer uzrokuje rak. Nalazi su objavljeni u časopisu Nature Communications.
Kako bi proveli svoje istraživanje, znanstvenici su koristili kvasac kao model organizma. Kvasac također proizvodi energiju iz šećera putem fermentacije, baš kao što to čine stanice raka. Također sadrži 'Ras' proteine koji se nalaze u raku.
Jedna od uloga Ras proteina u našim tijelima je kontrola rasta stanica. Ako geni koji ih kontroliraju mutiraju, Ras proteini mogu postati trajno aktivni, uzrokujući prevelik rast stanica, a time i nekontroliranu proliferaciju stanica raka.
Dakle, koristeći kvasac, istraživači su pogledali odnos između Rasa i metabolizma visokog šećera.
- Glavna prednost korištenja kvasca bila je ta što na naše istraživanje nisu utjecali dodatni regulatorni mehanizmi stanica sisavaca, koji skrivaju ključne temeljne procese. Tako smo uspjeli ciljati ovaj proces u stanicama kvasca i potvrditi njegovu prisutnost u stanicama sisavaca - objasnio je Profesor Thevelein.
Ova su otkrića vrlo uzbudljiva u smislu budućnosti istraživanja raka, jer znamo više o odnosu raka sa šećerom, ali napredak u istraživanju ne mora nužno biti jednak proboju u medicini.
Pojačava li povećani unos šećera rast raka ili bi se sustav razgradnje šećera mogao prekinuti, još uvijek su pitanja na koja nema odgovora.
