Katarakta, prirođeno ili degenerativno zamućenje leće oka, koje se često razvija s godinama, može se povezati s povećanim rizikom od smrtnog ishoda od srčanih bolesti, pokazalo je novo istraživanje.

Glavni simptom katarakte je postupno, bezbolno zamućenje vida. Dijagnoza se postavlja oftalmoskopijom i pretragom procjepnom svjetiljkom. Liječi se kirurškim odstranjenjem i umetanjem leće.

Stručnjaci ističu kako novo otkriće ne znači da katarakta uzrokuje srčane probleme te da svrha studije nije bila dokazati uzrok i posljedicu, prenosi portal HealthDay News.

"Različita zdravstvena stanja, poput visokoga krvnog tlaka, dijabetesa ili pušenja povezuju se s češćim razvojem katarakte, a iste su bolesti povezane s vaskularnom smrtnošću, što može objasniti taj suodnos", rekao je dr. Matthew Gorski, oftalmolog u njujorškoj bolnici Northwell Health. On vjeruje da bi pojava katarakte mogla ukazivati na neka druga zdravstvena stanja.

"Pacijenti bi rezultate ove studije trebali iskoristiti kao podsjetnik na važnost redovitih pregleda očiju kod svog oftalmologa, posebno kada se radi o starijim ljudima ili onih koji već imaju određene zdravstvene probleme", rekao je Gorski, koji nije sudjelovao u studiji. 

Podaci prikupljani od 1999. do 2008.

Istraživanje je provedeno u Australiji, a vodio ga je dr. Mingguang He iz Centra za istraživanje zdravlja očiju na Sveučilištu u Melbourneu.

Njegov je tim analizirao podatke prikupljene između 1999. i 2008. na gotovo 15.000 američkih pacijenata u dobi od 40 i više godine. Više od 2000 ili 9,6 posto ih je kazalo da su bili podvrgnuti operaciji katarakte.

Tijekom prosječnog praćenja stanja sudionika istraživanja koje je trajalo gotovo 11 godina, umrlo ih je oko 4000 ili 19 posto.

Nakon što su uzeli u obzir niz zdravstvenih i socioekonomskih čimbenika, znanstvenici su otkrili da je rizik od smrti od bilo kojeg uzroka bio za 13 posto veći, a rizik od smrti od srčanih bolesti 36 posto veći u osoba koje su operirale kataraktu.

Oksidativni stres (neravnoteža u prirodnim oksidacijskim procesima koji utječu na stanice) i depresija mogu biti uobičajeni čimbenici koji mogu utjecati na razvoj katarakte te istodobno povećati rizik od smrti u osoba sa srčanim bolestima, pokazala je studija.

Istodobno je studijom otkrivena "povezanost samoprijavljene operacije katarakte" i povećanog rizika od smrtnog ishoda od bilo kojeg uzroka - posebno od uzroka povezanih sa srčanim problemima, rekli su autori.

Operacija katarakte danas se obavlja ranije nego prije nekoliko desetljeća

Dr. Mark Fromer je oftalmolog u bolnici Lenox Hill u New Yorku. Pošto je proučio rezultate studije rekao je da "nije nikakvo iznenađenje očekivati ​​da pacijenti s kataraktom imaju i ostale pridružene bolesti jer je većina pacijenata s kataraktom starije životne dobi."

Fromer je zamijetio i da se kirurško odstranjenje katarakte danas obavlja u ranijoj pacijentovoj dobi nego što je to bilo prije nekoliko desetljeća.

"Takva je praksa rezultirala činjenicom da pacijenti nakon operacije žive dulje nego što je uočeno prije samo nekoliko desetljeća. Bolji vid nakon operacije rezultira boljom kvalitetom življenja i može spriječiti nesreće koje mogu dovesti do smrti i ozljeda zbog slabog vida."

Studija je objavljena 25. listopada u stručnome časopoisu British Journal of Ophthalmology.

Katarakta, prirođeno ili degenerativno zamućenje leće oka, koje se često razvija s godinama, može se povezati s povećanim rizikom od smrtnog ishoda od srčanih bolesti, pokazalo je novo istraživanje.

Glavni simptom katarakte je postupno, bezbolno zamućenje vida. Dijagnoza se postavlja oftalmoskopijom i pretragom procjepnom svjetiljkom. Liječi se kirurškim odstranjenjem i umetanjem leće.

Stručnjaci ističu kako novo otkriće ne znači da katarakta uzrokuje srčane probleme te da svrha studije nije bila dokazati uzrok i posljedicu, prenosi portal HealthDay News.

"Različita zdravstvena stanja, poput visokoga krvnog tlaka, dijabetesa ili pušenja povezuju se s češćim razvojem katarakte, a iste su bolesti povezane s vaskularnom smrtnošću, što može objasniti taj suodnos", rekao je dr. Matthew Gorski, oftalmolog u njujorškoj bolnici Northwell Health. On vjeruje da bi pojava katarakte mogla ukazivati na neka druga zdravstvena stanja.

"Pacijenti bi rezultate ove studije trebali iskoristiti kao podsjetnik na važnost redovitih pregleda očiju kod svog oftalmologa, posebno kada se radi o starijim ljudima ili onih koji već imaju određene zdravstvene probleme", rekao je Gorski, koji nije sudjelovao u studiji. 

Podaci prikupljani od 1999. do 2008.

Istraživanje je provedeno u Australiji, a vodio ga je dr. Mingguang He iz Centra za istraživanje zdravlja očiju na Sveučilištu u Melbourneu.

Njegov je tim analizirao podatke prikupljene između 1999. i 2008. na gotovo 15.000 američkih pacijenata u dobi od 40 i više godine. Više od 2000 ili 9,6 posto ih je kazalo da su bili podvrgnuti operaciji katarakte.

Tijekom prosječnog praćenja stanja sudionika istraživanja koje je trajalo gotovo 11 godina, umrlo ih je oko 4000 ili 19 posto.

Nakon što su uzeli u obzir niz zdravstvenih i socioekonomskih čimbenika, znanstvenici su otkrili da je rizik od smrti od bilo kojeg uzroka bio za 13 posto veći, a rizik od smrti od srčanih bolesti 36 posto veći u osoba koje su operirale kataraktu.

Oksidativni stres (neravnoteža u prirodnim oksidacijskim procesima koji utječu na stanice) i depresija mogu biti uobičajeni čimbenici koji mogu utjecati na razvoj katarakte te istodobno povećati rizik od smrti u osoba sa srčanim bolestima, pokazala je studija.

Istodobno je studijom otkrivena "povezanost samoprijavljene operacije katarakte" i povećanog rizika od smrtnog ishoda od bilo kojeg uzroka - posebno od uzroka povezanih sa srčanim problemima, rekli su autori.

Operacija katarakte danas se obavlja ranije nego prije nekoliko desetljeća

Dr. Mark Fromer je oftalmolog u bolnici Lenox Hill u New Yorku. Pošto je proučio rezultate studije rekao je da "nije nikakvo iznenađenje očekivati ​​da pacijenti s kataraktom imaju i ostale pridružene bolesti jer je većina pacijenata s kataraktom starije životne dobi."

Fromer je zamijetio i da se kirurško odstranjenje katarakte danas obavlja u ranijoj pacijentovoj dobi nego što je to bilo prije nekoliko desetljeća.

"Takva je praksa rezultirala činjenicom da pacijenti nakon operacije žive dulje nego što je uočeno prije samo nekoliko desetljeća. Bolji vid nakon operacije rezultira boljom kvalitetom življenja i može spriječiti nesreće koje mogu dovesti do smrti i ozljeda zbog slabog vida."

Studija je objavljena 25. listopada u stručnome časopoisu British Journal of Ophthalmology.
