Čovjek će uskoro ponovno hodati po Mjesecu, ako NASA uspije u onom što je naumila. A planira ovog vikenda lansirati svemirsku letjelicu bez posade, u sklopu misije Artemis I, kako bi kružila oko Mjeseca i zatim se vratila na Zemlju nakon otprilike mjesec i pol.
Bude li sve išlo po planu, buduća bi misija mogla spustiti astronaute na Mjesec 2025. godine. Zašto NASA to radi sada i što to znači za budućnost svemirskih putovanja - pitaju se retorički u New York Timesu i odgovaraju:
Nekoliko razloga tjera NASA-u da vrati astronaute na Mjesec po prvi put u više od 50 godina.
Važna ‘usputna‘ postaja
Jedna je dugogodišnja želja da se ljude dovede na Mars. Misije Artemis testirat će neke od tehnologije i logistiku potrebne za to.
"Ako vjerujete da se budućnost čovječanstva zapravo širi Sunčevim sustavom, prva postaja mora biti Mjesec. Ako to ne možete shvatiti, sigurno nećete stići na Mars", kaže novinar NYT-a koji pokriva NASA-u te dodaje:
"Ali, misija na Mjesec također ima određenu znanstvenu vrijednost sama po sebi. Na primjer, stijene prikupljene u prijašnjim misijama otkrile su porijeklo Mjeseca: vjerojatno je nastao od krhotina nakon što je objekt veličine Marsa udario Zemlju prije više od četiri milijarde godina. U misijama Artemis, NASA je posebno zainteresirana za proučavanje leda u lunarnim kraterima. Ovisno o tome koliko je dugo bio tamo, led i njegove karakteristike mogle bi pružiti uvid u povijest Sunčevog sustava. Led bi se također mogao koristiti za uspostavljanje trajnih baza na Mjesecu, ako se može pretvoriti u pitku vodu, kisik ili gorivo za svemirske letjelice."

A misije bi mogle proizvesti i neke kolateralne koristi. Prethodne inovacije u svemirskom programu dovele su do tehnološkog napretka u svakodnevnom životu, uključujući računarstvo i metode očuvanja hrane.
Lansiranje ovog vikenda prvotno je bilo zakazano za prošli ponedjeljak, ali ga je NASA odgodila nakon što je neposredno prije polijetanja otkrila tehnički problem. Moglo bi se to ponovno odgoditi, ako je vrijeme loše ili se pojavi neki drugi problem. Ali, čim uspije prva misija, NASA planira više putovanja na Mjesec. Artemis II, predviđen za 2024., imao bi posadu i letio oko Mjeseca, dok bi Artemis III, planiran za 2025., prvi bi put spustio ženu i osobu koja nije bijelac na Mjesec.

Kisik proizveden na Marsu
Budući da je ova priča dio one veće, o putovanju na Mars, svakako vrijedi zabilježiti da je mali uređaj, ne veći od tostera, proizveo kisik na površini Marsa, čime su šanse za preživljavanje na crvenom planetu korak bliže - javlja engleski Times.
Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, poznatiji kao Moxie, generirao je kisik iz atmosfere na Marsu, bogate ugljičnim dioksidom, u sklopu NASA-ine misije rovera Perseverance, koja je započela u veljači prošle godine.
Istraživanje objavljeno u časopisu Science Advances otkriva da je Moxie proizveo kisik pogodan za disanje, u sedam sati testiranja provedenog u različitim vremenskim i atmosferskim uvjetima od slijetanja prošle godine.
Tijekom svakog testa, uređaj je proizveo šest grama kisika, otprilike isto kao malo stablo i dovoljno da održi astronauta 15 minuta. Istraživanje je otkrilo da je Moxie nastavio proizvoditi kisik visoke čistoće čak i pri ekstremnim temperaturama i nakon marsovske pješčane oluje.
Jeffrey Hoffman (77), umirovljeni astronaut i profesor na aeronautičkom odjelu MIT-a, rekao je da su ovi rezultati "povijesni". Stoga NASA i MIT-ov tim planiraju napraviti veću verziju Moxieja. Nadaju se da će napredni modeli proizvesti dovoljno kisika za potporu misiji s posadom na Mars i potreban za slanje rakete natrag na Zemlju.

"Da bismo podržali ljudsku misiju na Marsu, moramo donijeti mnogo stvari sa Zemlje", rekao je Hoffman. “Ali, taj ‘glupi‘ kisik... Ako možete stići tamo, samo naprijed.”
Atmosfera na Marsu sastoji se od 96 posto ugljičnog dioksida i mnogo je promjenjivija nego na Zemlji. "Gustoća zraka može varirati za faktor-dva tijekom godine, a temperatura može varirati za 100 stupnjeva", rekao je Hoffman. Jedan od ciljeva je pokazati da možemo pokrenuti Moxie u svim godišnjim dobima."
Kako radi Moxie
Uređaj koristi pumpe koje usisavaju ugljični dioksid. Plin se zagrijava do 800°C i komprimira ga kako bi se odvojili ugljik i kisik. Ugljični monoksid se emitira kao otpad, dok čisti kisik ostaje. Povećanje uređaja za podršku ljudskoj misiji na Mars predstavlja izazov. NASA i MIT kažu da bi Moxie za tu potrebu trebao raditi neprekidno 400 dana, što je golemi skok u odnosu na postojeća testiranja. Stroj bi k tome zahtijevao izolaciju radi kontrole unutarnje temperature.

Međutim, Moxie se pokazao izdržljivim u ekstremnim uvjetima na Marsu, a znanstveni tim planira procijeniti ograničenja ovog stroja u nadolazećim mjesecima. Posebnu pozornost obratit će na to kako Moxie radi tijekom Marsovog proljeća, kada su gustoća atmosfere i razina ugljičnog dioksida visoke.
Trenutno je rana zima na mjestu slijetanja Perseverancea. Paralelno testiranje nastavit će se u laboratoriju na Zemlji kako bi se simulirali uvjeti na crvenom planetu dok projekt nastoji povećati stroj na veličinu od oko kubičnog metra.

Čovjek će uskoro ponovno hodati po Mjesecu, ako NASA uspije u onom što je naumila. A planira ovog vikenda lansirati svemirsku letjelicu bez posade, u sklopu misije Artemis I, kako bi kružila oko Mjeseca i zatim se vratila na Zemlju nakon otprilike mjesec i pol.
Bude li sve išlo po planu, buduća bi misija mogla spustiti astronaute na Mjesec 2025. godine. Zašto NASA to radi sada i što to znači za budućnost svemirskih putovanja - pitaju se retorički u New York Timesu i odgovaraju:
Nekoliko razloga tjera NASA-u da vrati astronaute na Mjesec po prvi put u više od 50 godina.
Važna ‘usputna‘ postaja
Jedna je dugogodišnja želja da se ljude dovede na Mars. Misije Artemis testirat će neke od tehnologije i logistiku potrebne za to.
"Ako vjerujete da se budućnost čovječanstva zapravo širi Sunčevim sustavom, prva postaja mora biti Mjesec. Ako to ne možete shvatiti, sigurno nećete stići na Mars", kaže novinar NYT-a koji pokriva NASA-u te dodaje:
"Ali, misija na Mjesec također ima određenu znanstvenu vrijednost sama po sebi. Na primjer, stijene prikupljene u prijašnjim misijama otkrile su porijeklo Mjeseca: vjerojatno je nastao od krhotina nakon što je objekt veličine Marsa udario Zemlju prije više od četiri milijarde godina. U misijama Artemis, NASA je posebno zainteresirana za proučavanje leda u lunarnim kraterima. Ovisno o tome koliko je dugo bio tamo, led i njegove karakteristike mogle bi pružiti uvid u povijest Sunčevog sustava. Led bi se također mogao koristiti za uspostavljanje trajnih baza na Mjesecu, ako se može pretvoriti u pitku vodu, kisik ili gorivo za svemirske letjelice."

A misije bi mogle proizvesti i neke kolateralne koristi. Prethodne inovacije u svemirskom programu dovele su do tehnološkog napretka u svakodnevnom životu, uključujući računarstvo i metode očuvanja hrane.
Lansiranje ovog vikenda prvotno je bilo zakazano za prošli ponedjeljak, ali ga je NASA odgodila nakon što je neposredno prije polijetanja otkrila tehnički problem. Moglo bi se to ponovno odgoditi, ako je vrijeme loše ili se pojavi neki drugi problem. Ali, čim uspije prva misija, NASA planira više putovanja na Mjesec. Artemis II, predviđen za 2024., imao bi posadu i letio oko Mjeseca, dok bi Artemis III, planiran za 2025., prvi bi put spustio ženu i osobu koja nije bijelac na Mjesec.

Kisik proizveden na Marsu
Budući da je ova priča dio one veće, o putovanju na Mars, svakako vrijedi zabilježiti da je mali uređaj, ne veći od tostera, proizveo kisik na površini Marsa, čime su šanse za preživljavanje na crvenom planetu korak bliže - javlja engleski Times.
Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, poznatiji kao Moxie, generirao je kisik iz atmosfere na Marsu, bogate ugljičnim dioksidom, u sklopu NASA-ine misije rovera Perseverance, koja je započela u veljači prošle godine.
Istraživanje objavljeno u časopisu Science Advances otkriva da je Moxie proizveo kisik pogodan za disanje, u sedam sati testiranja provedenog u različitim vremenskim i atmosferskim uvjetima od slijetanja prošle godine.
Tijekom svakog testa, uređaj je proizveo šest grama kisika, otprilike isto kao malo stablo i dovoljno da održi astronauta 15 minuta. Istraživanje je otkrilo da je Moxie nastavio proizvoditi kisik visoke čistoće čak i pri ekstremnim temperaturama i nakon marsovske pješčane oluje.
Jeffrey Hoffman (77), umirovljeni astronaut i profesor na aeronautičkom odjelu MIT-a, rekao je da su ovi rezultati "povijesni". Stoga NASA i MIT-ov tim planiraju napraviti veću verziju Moxieja. Nadaju se da će napredni modeli proizvesti dovoljno kisika za potporu misiji s posadom na Mars i potreban za slanje rakete natrag na Zemlju.

"Da bismo podržali ljudsku misiju na Marsu, moramo donijeti mnogo stvari sa Zemlje", rekao je Hoffman. “Ali, taj ‘glupi‘ kisik... Ako možete stići tamo, samo naprijed.”
Atmosfera na Marsu sastoji se od 96 posto ugljičnog dioksida i mnogo je promjenjivija nego na Zemlji. "Gustoća zraka može varirati za faktor-dva tijekom godine, a temperatura može varirati za 100 stupnjeva", rekao je Hoffman. Jedan od ciljeva je pokazati da možemo pokrenuti Moxie u svim godišnjim dobima."
Kako radi Moxie
Uređaj koristi pumpe koje usisavaju ugljični dioksid. Plin se zagrijava do 800°C i komprimira ga kako bi se odvojili ugljik i kisik. Ugljični monoksid se emitira kao otpad, dok čisti kisik ostaje. Povećanje uređaja za podršku ljudskoj misiji na Mars predstavlja izazov. NASA i MIT kažu da bi Moxie za tu potrebu trebao raditi neprekidno 400 dana, što je golemi skok u odnosu na postojeća testiranja. Stroj bi k tome zahtijevao izolaciju radi kontrole unutarnje temperature.

Međutim, Moxie se pokazao izdržljivim u ekstremnim uvjetima na Marsu, a znanstveni tim planira procijeniti ograničenja ovog stroja u nadolazećim mjesecima. Posebnu pozornost obratit će na to kako Moxie radi tijekom Marsovog proljeća, kada su gustoća atmosfere i razina ugljičnog dioksida visoke.
Trenutno je rana zima na mjestu slijetanja Perseverancea. Paralelno testiranje nastavit će se u laboratoriju na Zemlji kako bi se simulirali uvjeti na crvenom planetu dok projekt nastoji povećati stroj na veličinu od oko kubičnog metra.
