Predstavnici dviju zemalja potpisali su memorandum o sporazumu kojim se potvrđuje da će Šri Lanka izvozom čaja podmiriti 251 milijun dolara uvoznih pristojbi za naftu Iranu, rekao je Ramesh Pathirana, šef ministarstva plantaža Šri Lanke. "Nadamo se da ćemo svaki mjesec slati čaj u vrijednosti od 5 milijuna dolara kako bismo otplatili Iranu za kupovinu nafte koja je na čekanju već posljednje četiri godine", rekao je ministar, a citira Reuters.

Barter neće “kršiti nikakve sankcije UN-a ili SAD-a budući da je čaj kategoriziran kao hrana iz humanitarnih razloga, dok niti jedna od iranskih banaka s crne liste neće biti uključena u jednadžbu”, navodi se u priopćenju Ministarstva plantaža. “Preporučena shema će Šri Lanki uštedjeti prijeko potrebnu stranu valutu budući da bi nagodba prema Iranu bila izvršena u šrilankanskim rupijama kroz prodaju Cejlonskog čaja”, piše.

Oštra ograničenja protiv izvoza iranske nafte uveli su SAD tijekom administracije Donalda Trumpa kao dio svoje "kampanje maksimalnog pritiska" protiv zemlje. Kazne su izrečene ubrzo nakon što je Trump povukao Sjedinjene Države iz iranskog nuklearnog sporazuma iz 2015. godine. Washington je svakoj zemlji koja kupuje naftu od Irana zaprijetio sekundarnim sankcijama.

Ugovor o zamjeni dolazi usred ozbiljnih financijskih izazova s ​​kojima se Šri Lanka suočava. Zemlja mora isplatiti oko 4,5 milijardi dolara otplate duga 2022., počevši od međunarodne državne obveznice od 500 milijuna dolara koja dospijeva u siječnju. Međutim, njezini inozemni udjeli su krajem studenog pali na 1,6 milijardi dolara, prema posljednjim podacima koje je objavila Središnja banka Šri Lanke.

Ranije ovog mjeseca, Fitch Ratings snizio je suvereni rejting Šri Lanke s CCC na CC, navodeći rastući rizik neplaćanja duga sljedeće godine. Agencija je rekla da nacija ima dug u stranoj valuti u iznosu od 6,9 milijardi dolara u 2022., što je ekvivalentno gotovo 430 posto njezinih službenih bruto međunarodnih pričuva od studenog 2021. Godišnja proizvodnja čaja u zemlji navodno iznosi oko 340 milijuna kilograma. U 2020. Šri Lanka je izvezla 265,5 milijuna kilograma čaja, što ga čini najvećom zaradom u zemlji, prošle godine vrijednom 1,24 milijarde dolara.

Ovo je prvi put da je nacija bila u mogućnosti upotrijebiti zalihe čaja u barter aranžmanu za podmirenje inozemnog duga, rekao je visoki član odbora za čaj zemlje. Međutim, glasnogovornik Udruge plantažera Šri Lanke nazvao je tu odluku "vladinim rješenjem". "To ne mora nužno koristiti izvoznicima jer ćemo biti plaćeni u rupijama, zaobilazeći slobodno tržište i ne predstavlja nam stvarnu vrijednost", rekao je Roshan Rajadurai medijima.

Predstavnici dviju zemalja potpisali su memorandum o sporazumu kojim se potvrđuje da će Šri Lanka izvozom čaja podmiriti 251 milijun dolara uvoznih pristojbi za naftu Iranu, rekao je Ramesh Pathirana, šef ministarstva plantaža Šri Lanke. "Nadamo se da ćemo svaki mjesec slati čaj u vrijednosti od 5 milijuna dolara kako bismo otplatili Iranu za kupovinu nafte koja je na čekanju već posljednje četiri godine", rekao je ministar, a citira Reuters.

Oštra ograničenja protiv izvoza iranske nafte uveli su SAD tijekom administracije Donalda Trumpa kao dio svoje "kampanje maksimalnog pritiska" protiv zemlje. Kazne su izrečene ubrzo nakon što je Trump povukao Sjedinjene Države iz iranskog nuklearnog sporazuma iz 2015. godine. Washington je svakoj zemlji koja kupuje naftu od Irana zaprijetio sekundarnim sankcijama.

Ugovor o zamjeni dolazi usred ozbiljnih financijskih izazova s ​​kojima se Šri Lanka suočava. Zemlja mora isplatiti oko 4,5 milijardi dolara otplate duga 2022., počevši od međunarodne državne obveznice od 500 milijuna dolara koja dospijeva u siječnju. Međutim, njezini inozemni udjeli su krajem studenog pali na 1,6 milijardi dolara, prema posljednjim podacima koje je objavila Središnja banka Šri Lanke.

Ranije ovog mjeseca, Fitch Ratings snizio je suvereni rejting Šri Lanke s CCC na CC, navodeći rastući rizik neplaćanja duga sljedeće godine. Agencija je rekla da nacija ima dug u stranoj valuti u iznosu od 6,9 milijardi dolara u 2022., što je ekvivalentno gotovo 430 posto njezinih službenih bruto međunarodnih pričuva od studenog 2021. Godišnja proizvodnja čaja u zemlji navodno iznosi oko 340 milijuna kilograma. U 2020. Šri Lanka je izvezla 265,5 milijuna kilograma čaja, što ga čini najvećom zaradom u zemlji, prošle godine vrijednom 1,24 milijarde dolara.

Ovo je prvi put da je nacija bila u mogućnosti upotrijebiti zalihe čaja u barter aranžmanu za podmirenje inozemnog duga, rekao je visoki član odbora za čaj zemlje. Međutim, glasnogovornik Udruge plantažera Šri Lanke nazvao je tu odluku "vladinim rješenjem". "To ne mora nužno koristiti izvoznicima jer ćemo biti plaćeni u rupijama, zaobilazeći slobodno tržište i ne predstavlja nam stvarnu vrijednost", rekao je Roshan Rajadurai medijima.

Predstavnici dviju zemalja potpisali su memorandum o sporazumu kojim se potvrđuje da će Šri Lanka izvozom čaja podmiriti 251 milijun dolara uvoznih pristojbi za naftu Iranu, rekao je Ramesh Pathirana, šef ministarstva plantaža Šri Lanke. "Nadamo se da ćemo svaki mjesec slati čaj u vrijednosti od 5 milijuna dolara kako bismo otplatili Iranu za kupovinu nafte koja je na čekanju već posljednje četiri godine", rekao je ministar, a citira Reuters.
