Prisjećajući se terorističkih napada 11. rujna 2001., Joseph Dittmar malo se smije, malo plače. S traumama se nosi tako što često priča o tome kako je sišao stubama sa 105. kata južnog tornja Svjetskog trgovačkog centra (WTC) tren prije njegova urušavanja.

Njegov silazak niz tih 105 katova, što i 20 godina poslije fotografski pamti, nalik je tragičnom epu. Otac četvero djece, tada 44-godišnjak koji je kobnog dana bio na sastanku osiguravatelja u prostoriji bez prozora u južnom tornju WTC-a, svoj život duguje odlukama koje je donosio u djeliću sekunde. 

Kad se prvi oteti zrakoplov zaletio u sjeverni toranj WTC-a, u prostoriji u kojoj je bio samo su zatreptala svjetla. Negodujući zbog poziva da se evakuiraju, Tek su stigavši na 90. kat, do prvog prozora, vidjeli dramu koja se odvijala u sjevernom tornju.

„To je bilo 30, 40 najgorih sekundi u mojem životu”, rekao je Dittmar. Njegovi kolege bili su „kao hipnotizirani”, ali on je odmah odlučio otići.

Tada je živio u Chicagu, a rodom je iz Philadelphije, pa se uz osmijeh prisjeća kako je pomislio: „Svaki put kad dođem u ovaj grad, nešto se dogodi!”.

Vratio se na stubište, krenuo spuštati i naletio je na jednog kolegu, bivšeg igrača američkog nogometa Ludwiga Picarra. On je odlučio 'skoknuti' na zahod što ga je koštalo života. 

Dittmar sjeća se kako mu je na 78. katu kolegica iznad njega vikala da se dizalom izravno spusti u prizemlje. No on se sjetio da je dizala zabranjeno koristiti u slučaju požara. Nastavio je stubama, što mu je bila najbolja odluka u životu.

Kako se može biti toliko hrabar?

Unatoč strahu, Dittmar se sjeća da su si ljudi međusobno pomagali što je bilo nevjerojatno, poput jednog čovjeka koji nije oklijevao na leđima ponijeti hendikepiranu ženu.
 
Ali suze mu navru na oči kada se sjeti „pravih junaka” tih 50-ak minuta silaska. Počevši od vatrogasaca i spasilaca s kojima se mimoišao na 31. katu, koji su se penjali kako bi pokušali nekome spasiti život. „Njihov je pogled govorio da znaju da je sve izgubljeno”, rekao je.

„Kako se može biti toliko hrabar? Kako se može biti toliko snažan?”.

Na 15. katu zaštitar je evakuirao ljude šaleći se i pjevajući na megafon God Bless America.

"Pjevao je užasno loše, ali je htio opustiti ljude (...) Kao kapetan Titanika koji je rekao orkestru da svira dok su se ljudi ukrcavali u čamce za spašavanje”.

Dittmar je izišao napolje, udaljio se nekoliko minuta hoda od WTC-a i južni toranj tada se srušio. Tisuće ljudi užasnuto su istodobno vrisnule i taj vrisak on i dalje čuje „svaki dan”.

Nastaviti pričati

Dittmar je ispričao svoju priču stotinama puta, pred učenicima iz cijele zemlje, i ne odustaje. 

„To je moja terapija”, rekao je. Dijeleći bez ograde svoja sjećanja i emocije, izbjegao je noćne more, posttraumatski stresni poremećaj i osjećaj krivnje što je preživio.

S tetovažom „911” na zapešću, značkom tornjeva blizanaca na ovratniku i kamenom za meditaciju u džepu, 11. rujna prati ga posvuda „poput sjene”, rekao je.

Sklopio je mnoga prijateljstva, s drugim preživjelima i s rodbinom nestalih. 

"Prvi put ne znate što biste im rekli. Ali kada im pričate o onom kratkom trenutku kada ste vidjeli njihova bližnjeg na 90. katu, oživite ga. (...) I postajete prijatelji, prijatelji za cijeli život”.

Dittmar, koji i dalje radi za osiguravajuće društvo, postao je fan Njujorčana.

„Oni su iznenađujuće otporni, ničega se ne boje... Naučio sam ih voljeti”.

Pandemija je to potvrdila. „Bio je grad duhova, a sada su mnogi vani. Jer je grad rekao: 'Nećemo dopustiti da nas unište'.”
I on sam se odhrvao koronavirusu. Budući da je dijabetičar, počeo je zdravo jesti i hodati pet kilometara na dan. Smršavio je 23 kilograma.

„Pandemija me, nekako kao i 11. rujna, promijenila...Rekao sam si: moram živjeti bolje.”

Prisjećajući se terorističkih napada 11. rujna 2001., Joseph Dittmar malo se smije, malo plače. S traumama se nosi tako što često priča o tome kako je sišao stubama sa 105. kata južnog tornja Svjetskog trgovačkog centra (WTC) tren prije njegova urušavanja.

Njegov silazak niz tih 105 katova, što i 20 godina poslije fotografski pamti, nalik je tragičnom epu. Otac četvero djece, tada 44-godišnjak koji je kobnog dana bio na sastanku osiguravatelja u prostoriji bez prozora u južnom tornju WTC-a, svoj život duguje odlukama koje je donosio u djeliću sekunde. 

Kad se prvi oteti zrakoplov zaletio u sjeverni toranj WTC-a, u prostoriji u kojoj je bio samo su zatreptala svjetla. Negodujući zbog poziva da se evakuiraju, Tek su stigavši na 90. kat, do prvog prozora, vidjeli dramu koja se odvijala u sjevernom tornju.

„To je bilo 30, 40 najgorih sekundi u mojem životu”, rekao je Dittmar. Njegovi kolege bili su „kao hipnotizirani”, ali on je odmah odlučio otići.

Tada je živio u Chicagu, a rodom je iz Philadelphije, pa se uz osmijeh prisjeća kako je pomislio: „Svaki put kad dođem u ovaj grad, nešto se dogodi!”.

Vratio se na stubište, krenuo spuštati i naletio je na jednog kolegu, bivšeg igrača američkog nogometa Ludwiga Picarra. On je odlučio 'skoknuti' na zahod što ga je koštalo života. 

Dittmar sjeća se kako mu je na 78. katu kolegica iznad njega vikala da se dizalom izravno spusti u prizemlje. No on se sjetio da je dizala zabranjeno koristiti u slučaju požara. Nastavio je stubama, što mu je bila najbolja odluka u životu.

Kako se može biti toliko hrabar?

Unatoč strahu, Dittmar se sjeća da su si ljudi međusobno pomagali što je bilo nevjerojatno, poput jednog čovjeka koji nije oklijevao na leđima ponijeti hendikepiranu ženu.
 
Ali suze mu navru na oči kada se sjeti „pravih junaka” tih 50-ak minuta silaska. Počevši od vatrogasaca i spasilaca s kojima se mimoišao na 31. katu, koji su se penjali kako bi pokušali nekome spasiti život. „Njihov je pogled govorio da znaju da je sve izgubljeno”, rekao je.

„Kako se može biti toliko hrabar? Kako se može biti toliko snažan?”.

Na 15. katu zaštitar je evakuirao ljude šaleći se i pjevajući na megafon God Bless America.

"Pjevao je užasno loše, ali je htio opustiti ljude (...) Kao kapetan Titanika koji je rekao orkestru da svira dok su se ljudi ukrcavali u čamce za spašavanje”.

Dittmar je izišao napolje, udaljio se nekoliko minuta hoda od WTC-a i južni toranj tada se srušio. Tisuće ljudi užasnuto su istodobno vrisnule i taj vrisak on i dalje čuje „svaki dan”.

Nastaviti pričati

Dittmar je ispričao svoju priču stotinama puta, pred učenicima iz cijele zemlje, i ne odustaje. 

„To je moja terapija”, rekao je. Dijeleći bez ograde svoja sjećanja i emocije, izbjegao je noćne more, posttraumatski stresni poremećaj i osjećaj krivnje što je preživio.

S tetovažom „911” na zapešću, značkom tornjeva blizanaca na ovratniku i kamenom za meditaciju u džepu, 11. rujna prati ga posvuda „poput sjene”, rekao je.

Sklopio je mnoga prijateljstva, s drugim preživjelima i s rodbinom nestalih. 

"Prvi put ne znate što biste im rekli. Ali kada im pričate o onom kratkom trenutku kada ste vidjeli njihova bližnjeg na 90. katu, oživite ga. (...) I postajete prijatelji, prijatelji za cijeli život”.

Dittmar, koji i dalje radi za osiguravajuće društvo, postao je fan Njujorčana.

„Oni su iznenađujuće otporni, ničega se ne boje... Naučio sam ih voljeti”.

Pandemija je to potvrdila. „Bio je grad duhova, a sada su mnogi vani. Jer je grad rekao: 'Nećemo dopustiti da nas unište'.”
I on sam se odhrvao koronavirusu. Budući da je dijabetičar, počeo je zdravo jesti i hodati pet kilometara na dan. Smršavio je 23 kilograma.

„Pandemija me, nekako kao i 11. rujna, promijenila...Rekao sam si: moram živjeti bolje.”
