Već prva istraživanja, dok se koronavirus još nije ni proširio iz Kine na ostatak svijeta, jasno su ukazivala da nismo svi jednako ugroženi od zaraze Covidom-19.
Također, i sve naknadne studije potvrdile su kako postoji vrlo jasna krivulja stope smrtnosti u kojoj su na samome dnu djeca, a na vrhu starije osobe.
U Kini, u kojoj je zaraženo više od 80.000 osoba, u samo 2,4 posto slučajeva oboljela su djeca. Ni jedno od njih nije umrlo, bolest su uglavnom preboljela u hodu i samo 0,2 posto od oboljele djece bilo je u kritičnom stanju.
Kod ovakvih respiratornih infekcija, obično se raspoznaje krivulja u obliku slova 'U' koja pokazuje kome je najteže. Mala djeca su na jednom kraju, jer njihov imunološki sustav još nije razvijen, a starije osobe čiji je imunološki sustav jako oslabljen na drugom kraju.
Međutim, s ovim virusom nema te krivulje, naprosto nedostaje jedan krak slova U – jer djeca ni blizu nisu ugrožena kao stari.
Zašto je tome tako ne znaju ni znanstvenici. Svjetski epidemiolozi i virolozi objašnjavaju kako ćemo dobiti dodatno oružje u borbi protiv pandemije kad shvatimo zašto virus ubija najstarije, a ne i djecu.
Omjer broja umrlih naspram broja zaraženih najviši je kod osoba starijih od 80 godina i prema podacima objavljenim na Worldometersu iznosi 14.8 posto.
Ta je statistika izvedena na temelju analize 72.314 slučajeva zaraženih u Kini, a prema njoj kod osoba između 70 i 79 godina smrtnost je osam posto, a za one između 60 i 69 godina 3,6 posto. Kod ljudi od 50 do 59 godina smrtnost je 1,3 posto, od 40 do 49 godina 0,4 posto, od 10 do 39 godina 0,2 posto, dok kod djece mlađe od 10 godina nema nijednog smrtnog slučaja.
Neka novija medicinska istraživanja, o kojima pišu svjetski mediji, govore o još većim stopama smrtnosti kod oboljelih ljudi iznad 80 godina, čak oko 20 posto, a u Italiji su brojke još i gore jer se virus uvukao u bolnički sustav gdje je napao već bolesne ljude.
Kako starimo, sustavi koje naše tijelo koristi u borbi protiv bolesti se troše. Ne samo da se tijelo teže bori s novim infekcijama poput Covida-19 nego je veća vjerojatnost da će biti pogođene kroničnim bolestima koje slabe imunološki sustav.
Što duže živimo, veća je vjerojatnost da će se naše stanice razmnožavati na opasne načine, što nas s godinama dovodi do povećanog rizika od kroničnih i zloćudnih bolesti, a uz već oslabljeni imunološki sustav, ove osnovne bolesti mogu tijelu otežati odbacivanje infekcija.
Prema podacima studije objavljene u časopisu "The Lancet", najvećem riziku su izložene starije osobe iznad 65 godina koje već boluju od kardiovaskularnih oboljenja, plućne bolesti, dijabetesa ili imaju tumor. Prve analaze pokazuju i kako su među starijim pacijentima koji su umrli u Italiji prvih dana zaraze, njih dvije trećine imalo tri ili više kroničnih bolesti.
Najčešća je to bila hipertenzija, praćena ishemijskom bolešću srca i dijabetes. Ove kronične bolesti mogu ostaviti organe podložnijima infekciji. Uz to, tretmani ovih kroničnih stanja mogu suzbiti imunološki sustav, ostavljajući tijelo osjetljivijim na patogene.
Kod starijih osoba broj bijelih krvnih stanica, koji pomaže u borbi s infekcijom, može opadati. Stanice također postaju manje sposobne u identificiranju novih patogena protiv kojih se bore. U slučaju Covida-19, virus također može oštetiti imunološke stanice koje bi u protivnom mogle pobijediti zarazu, napominju liječnici.
Ako, za početak, ima manje tih stanica, a slabije su nego što su bile prije, bolest može nanijeti veću štetu.
- Kod starijih ljudi imunološka funkcija nije tako snažna kao kod mlađih ljudi. Kod većine ljudi njihova imunološka funkcija u redu u 60-ima, i 70-ima, dok naglo opada nakon 75 ili 80 godina - komentirao je za američki Vox Sean Leng, profesor medicine na Medicinskom fakultetu Sveučilišta Johns Hopkins.
Isti liječnik objašnjava kako se, kad dođe do reakcije na infekciju, imunološki sustav starije osobe suočava s većom šansom za opasno prekomjerno djelovanje - poznato kao oluja citokina. To je ozbiljna imunološka reakcija u kojoj tijelo proizvodi imunološke stanice i proteine koji mogu uništiti druge organe.
Pretjerano jak imunološki odgovor organizma, naime, može biti i koban jer se tijelo praktički okreće protiv samoga sebe. Tijekom te oluje, citokini se prekomjerno proizvode, što može prouzročiti jaku upalu, visoku temperaturu i zatajenje organa.
Postoje i drugi problemi, naizgled banalni, koji su povezani sa starenjem, a koji igraju važnu ulogu. Stariji ljudi primjerice teže iskašljavaju, što im također otežava izbacivanje i uklanjanje virusa Covid-19 iz dišnih putova.

Već prva istraživanja, dok se koronavirus još nije ni proširio iz Kine na ostatak svijeta, jasno su ukazivala da nismo svi jednako ugroženi od zaraze Covidom-19.
Također, i sve naknadne studije potvrdile su kako postoji vrlo jasna krivulja stope smrtnosti u kojoj su na samome dnu djeca, a na vrhu starije osobe.
U Kini, u kojoj je zaraženo više od 80.000 osoba, u samo 2,4 posto slučajeva oboljela su djeca. Ni jedno od njih nije umrlo, bolest su uglavnom preboljela u hodu i samo 0,2 posto od oboljele djece bilo je u kritičnom stanju.
Kod ovakvih respiratornih infekcija, obično se raspoznaje krivulja u obliku slova 'U' koja pokazuje kome je najteže. Mala djeca su na jednom kraju, jer njihov imunološki sustav još nije razvijen, a starije osobe čiji je imunološki sustav jako oslabljen na drugom kraju.
Međutim, s ovim virusom nema te krivulje, naprosto nedostaje jedan krak slova U – jer djeca ni blizu nisu ugrožena kao stari.
Zašto je tome tako ne znaju ni znanstvenici. Svjetski epidemiolozi i virolozi objašnjavaju kako ćemo dobiti dodatno oružje u borbi protiv pandemije kad shvatimo zašto virus ubija najstarije, a ne i djecu.
Omjer broja umrlih naspram broja zaraženih najviši je kod osoba starijih od 80 godina i prema podacima objavljenim na Worldometersu iznosi 14.8 posto.
Ta je statistika izvedena na temelju analize 72.314 slučajeva zaraženih u Kini, a prema njoj kod osoba između 70 i 79 godina smrtnost je osam posto, a za one između 60 i 69 godina 3,6 posto. Kod ljudi od 50 do 59 godina smrtnost je 1,3 posto, od 40 do 49 godina 0,4 posto, od 10 do 39 godina 0,2 posto, dok kod djece mlađe od 10 godina nema nijednog smrtnog slučaja.
Neka novija medicinska istraživanja, o kojima pišu svjetski mediji, govore o još većim stopama smrtnosti kod oboljelih ljudi iznad 80 godina, čak oko 20 posto, a u Italiji su brojke još i gore jer se virus uvukao u bolnički sustav gdje je napao već bolesne ljude.
Kako starimo, sustavi koje naše tijelo koristi u borbi protiv bolesti se troše. Ne samo da se tijelo teže bori s novim infekcijama poput Covida-19 nego je veća vjerojatnost da će biti pogođene kroničnim bolestima koje slabe imunološki sustav.
Što duže živimo, veća je vjerojatnost da će se naše stanice razmnožavati na opasne načine, što nas s godinama dovodi do povećanog rizika od kroničnih i zloćudnih bolesti, a uz već oslabljeni imunološki sustav, ove osnovne bolesti mogu tijelu otežati odbacivanje infekcija.
Prema podacima studije objavljene u časopisu "The Lancet", najvećem riziku su izložene starije osobe iznad 65 godina koje već boluju od kardiovaskularnih oboljenja, plućne bolesti, dijabetesa ili imaju tumor. Prve analaze pokazuju i kako su među starijim pacijentima koji su umrli u Italiji prvih dana zaraze, njih dvije trećine imalo tri ili više kroničnih bolesti.
Najčešća je to bila hipertenzija, praćena ishemijskom bolešću srca i dijabetes. Ove kronične bolesti mogu ostaviti organe podložnijima infekciji. Uz to, tretmani ovih kroničnih stanja mogu suzbiti imunološki sustav, ostavljajući tijelo osjetljivijim na patogene.
Kod starijih osoba broj bijelih krvnih stanica, koji pomaže u borbi s infekcijom, može opadati. Stanice također postaju manje sposobne u identificiranju novih patogena protiv kojih se bore. U slučaju Covida-19, virus također može oštetiti imunološke stanice koje bi u protivnom mogle pobijediti zarazu, napominju liječnici.
Ako, za početak, ima manje tih stanica, a slabije su nego što su bile prije, bolest može nanijeti veću štetu.
- Kod starijih ljudi imunološka funkcija nije tako snažna kao kod mlađih ljudi. Kod većine ljudi njihova imunološka funkcija u redu u 60-ima, i 70-ima, dok naglo opada nakon 75 ili 80 godina - komentirao je za američki Vox Sean Leng, profesor medicine na Medicinskom fakultetu Sveučilišta Johns Hopkins.
Isti liječnik objašnjava kako se, kad dođe do reakcije na infekciju, imunološki sustav starije osobe suočava s većom šansom za opasno prekomjerno djelovanje - poznato kao oluja citokina. To je ozbiljna imunološka reakcija u kojoj tijelo proizvodi imunološke stanice i proteine koji mogu uništiti druge organe.
Pretjerano jak imunološki odgovor organizma, naime, može biti i koban jer se tijelo praktički okreće protiv samoga sebe. Tijekom te oluje, citokini se prekomjerno proizvode, što može prouzročiti jaku upalu, visoku temperaturu i zatajenje organa.
Postoje i drugi problemi, naizgled banalni, koji su povezani sa starenjem, a koji igraju važnu ulogu. Stariji ljudi primjerice teže iskašljavaju, što im također otežava izbacivanje i uklanjanje virusa Covid-19 iz dišnih putova.
