Drevna egipatska luka Berenika na zapadnoj obali Crvenog mora odala je jednu neobičnu tajnu - arheolozi su u njoj pronašli interesantnu statuu Bude koja datira iz 2. stoljeća nove ere. O nalazu je javio National Geographic, a potvrdu je dala egipatska vlada.

Berenika je bila važan grad i luka u kojoj su se sastajale trgovačke rute Egipta i Etiopije sa Sirijom i Indijom.

Grad je osnovao ga je Ptolemej II. Filadelf oko 275. prije nove ere i nazvao po svojoj majci.

Osim luke je sagrađena i cesta duga 258 rimskih milja, koja je spajala Bereniku s Koptosom (današnji Qift) u dolini Nila. U rimsko doba je cesta bila poznata kao Via Hadriana, a Rimljani su postavili posebnog prefekta koji je upravljao lukom. Ona je napuštena u 6. stoljeću.

Ostatke grada je godine 1818. pronašao Giovanni Battista Belzoni. Od tada traju arheološka iskapanja koja su otkrila niz vrijednih artefakata koji govore o intenzivnim trgovačkim vezama Indije i Mediterana u helenističko i rimsko doba.

Poznato je da luka, između 1. i 2. stoljeća nove ere pod rimskom upravom bila važan punkt za trgovinu slonovima korištenim u u ratovima i egzotičnom robom kao što su papar, poludrago kamenje, tkanina i slonovača, koja je putovala između Indije, Šri Lanke i Gornjeg Egipta.

Ekipa arheologa iz Amerike i Poljske je nekoliko godina radila na istraživanju ovog lokaliteta, da bi nedavno u kompleksu jednog hrama našli statuu visoku 71 centimetar koja prikazuje Budu u stojećem stavu. Buda je u halji, s desne strane je prično oštećen,, a glavu mu krasi aureoloa koja predstavlja sunčeve zrake.

Taj element čest je u u budističkoj ikonografiji kako bi se dočarala učiteljeva navodna mogućnost da se "pretvori u svjetlost", odnosno da zrači dok se nalazi u stanju nirvane.

Prema dr. Mariusu Goyazdi, materijal korišten za izradu kipa potječe najverovatnije iz okolice Istanbula, a jedna od mogućih teorija je da su trgovci iz Indije na svom putu naručili skulpturu od lokalnih klesara.

Potom su je postavili u obližnji hram, gdje su otkriveni natpisi na sanskritskom jeziku - pored onih napisanih na starogrčkom.

Arheolozi su također otkrili dva novčića iz indijskog kraljevstva Satavahana, drevne indijske dinastije. Satavahana je bilo jedno od prvih indijskih kraljevstava koje je kovalo novac sa likovima svojih vladara, a dva takva primerka otkrivena u Berenici datiraju također iz 2. stoljeća nove ere.

Nalaz Bude otkriva važne trgovačke veze između Rimskog Carstva i Indije, izjavili su predstvanici egipatske vlade.

Drevna egipatska luka Berenika na zapadnoj obali Crvenog mora odala je jednu neobičnu tajnu - arheolozi su u njoj pronašli interesantnu statuu Bude koja datira iz 2. stoljeća nove ere. O nalazu je javio National Geographic, a potvrdu je dala egipatska vlada.

Berenika je bila važan grad i luka u kojoj su se sastajale trgovačke rute Egipta i Etiopije sa Sirijom i Indijom.

Grad je osnovao ga je Ptolemej II. Filadelf oko 275. prije nove ere i nazvao po svojoj majci.

Osim luke je sagrađena i cesta duga 258 rimskih milja, koja je spajala Bereniku s Koptosom (današnji Qift) u dolini Nila. U rimsko doba je cesta bila poznata kao Via Hadriana, a Rimljani su postavili posebnog prefekta koji je upravljao lukom. Ona je napuštena u 6. stoljeću.

Ostatke grada je godine 1818. pronašao Giovanni Battista Belzoni. Od tada traju arheološka iskapanja koja su otkrila niz vrijednih artefakata koji govore o intenzivnim trgovačkim vezama Indije i Mediterana u helenističko i rimsko doba.

Poznato je da luka, između 1. i 2. stoljeća nove ere pod rimskom upravom bila važan punkt za trgovinu slonovima korištenim u u ratovima i egzotičnom robom kao što su papar, poludrago kamenje, tkanina i slonovača, koja je putovala između Indije, Šri Lanke i Gornjeg Egipta.

Ekipa arheologa iz Amerike i Poljske je nekoliko godina radila na istraživanju ovog lokaliteta, da bi nedavno u kompleksu jednog hrama našli statuu visoku 71 centimetar koja prikazuje Budu u stojećem stavu. Buda je u halji, s desne strane je prično oštećen,, a glavu mu krasi aureoloa koja predstavlja sunčeve zrake.

Taj element čest je u u budističkoj ikonografiji kako bi se dočarala učiteljeva navodna mogućnost da se "pretvori u svjetlost", odnosno da zrači dok se nalazi u stanju nirvane.

Prema dr. Mariusu Goyazdi, materijal korišten za izradu kipa potječe najverovatnije iz okolice Istanbula, a jedna od mogućih teorija je da su trgovci iz Indije na svom putu naručili skulpturu od lokalnih klesara.

Potom su je postavili u obližnji hram, gdje su otkriveni natpisi na sanskritskom jeziku - pored onih napisanih na starogrčkom.

Arheolozi su također otkrili dva novčića iz indijskog kraljevstva Satavahana, drevne indijske dinastije. Satavahana je bilo jedno od prvih indijskih kraljevstava koje je kovalo novac sa likovima svojih vladara, a dva takva primerka otkrivena u Berenici datiraju također iz 2. stoljeća nove ere.

Nalaz Bude otkriva važne trgovačke veze između Rimskog Carstva i Indije, izjavili su predstvanici egipatske vlade.

Drevna egipatska luka Berenika na zapadnoj obali Crvenog mora odala je jednu neobičnu tajnu - arheolozi su u njoj pronašli interesantnu statuu Bude koja datira iz 2. stoljeća nove ere. O nalazu je javio National Geographic, a potvrdu je dala egipatska vlada.

Berenika je bila važan grad i luka u kojoj su se sastajale trgovačke rute Egipta i Etiopije sa Sirijom i Indijom.

Grad je osnovao ga je Ptolemej II. Filadelf oko 275. prije nove ere i nazvao po svojoj majci.

Osim luke je sagrađena i cesta duga 258 rimskih milja, koja je spajala Bereniku s Koptosom (današnji Qift) u dolini Nila. U rimsko doba je cesta bila poznata kao Via Hadriana, a Rimljani su postavili posebnog prefekta koji je upravljao lukom. Ona je napuštena u 6. stoljeću.
